If you buy illegal drugs you're supporting terrorism?

First of all, when has any "Columbian drug-load" ever committed an act of terrorism?
ummm do you realize that Columbia is the world leader in kidnappings? Small time dealers use kidnapping to get ransom, to produce funds, to fund his up-start drug trade, becoming a drug lord. sounds like terrorism to me.

maybe they are talking about buying illegal drugs causing increased us terrorism abroad. LIke how the US sprays many suspected drug sites in columbia with round up. THey also hit many local farms etc and destroy the lively hood of us communities

Talk about Propaganda, lets talk about those stupid (Truth commercials) about smoking. I don't deny that smoking does hurt your health and that there isn't alot of crap in them. But come on weve known for forty years that they are bad for us yet people smoke them, and they want to continue to blame the tobacco companies!!!! Lets blame the people that actually create the Market THE SMOKERS!!!! They are the reason that so many people die from health problems each year. and lets not forget smoking is LEGAL!!!! I would rather see them make tobacco illegal then continue to take our freedom and rights away. What's next? go after Mcdonalds for selling to much fat in there hamburgers??? this crackdown on Smoking will soon be completed then these nuts will go after another industry and bring to its knees. Its really pathetic.

Then the ad should have said.
If you buy Cocaine you could be supporting south american terrorism, if you buy opium products you could be supporting middle eastern terrorism.

I didn't see that ad since I don't like sports (Yeah I'm unamercian
rolleye.gif
) but if I understand what was said correctly, the ad as run was a blanket statement covering ALL drugs (or atleast all illegal drugs) and as such it is total B.S.

As I stated before. If I buy Pot from a local grower I'm only supporting HIM (unless he gets busted, then I'm supporting the war on drugs and my local police dept. because they will take ALL his stuff and sell it to fund themselves!)

So by using their same logic I think the ad should have said. "if you buy drugs, you could be supporting the war on drugs!"

That would be more truthfull, and a statement that BOTH side's of the issue would have to agree on.
Plus it creates quite a dilema.

"gosh it I buy these drugs, I could be supporting the fight against them!"

"Gosh if I want drug use to end, maybe I should go buy some!"

😉

HOOORAY FOR OUR HYPOCRITICAL PRESIDENCY. I posted this in another forum:
Anyone here think the 'drugs = supporting terrorism' superbowl commercial is the most f**king stupid commercial of all time? I can't believe that after Bush asked congress to be 'fiscally responsible' in his state of the union address that the whitehouse would financially support an ad with millions of taxpayer dollars like that.

It's funny because not only is it a bullsh*t blanket statement, i could easily argue that buying gasoline supports terrorism. Ironic how the republicans give major support to the oil companies eh?

NOT ONLY THAT, but bin laden also gets a LOT of money from the diamonds trade. You bought an engagement ring for your woman == YOU JUST HELPED A TERRORIST BUY ANTHRAX OFF THE BLACK MARKET, OH NOOSSSSSS.

What about specifying what drugs supports terrorism? Does the homegrown ecstacy help terrorists? And if i remember correctly, the Northern alliance was getting a S**tload of money off the heroin trade. The taliban even tried getting rid of heroin. Shouldn't we be BUYING more heroin? ^_^

And to say using drugs supports terrorism kinda begs the question why we have a 'war on drugs' in the first place. If we didn't criminalize drugs, we wouldn't be supporting columbian drug lords. CASE CLOSED

Excuse me while i encourage a few of my friends to not buy weed or prescription xanax, cuz you know, i wouldn't want them to help terrorists buy an AK-47 or something.

I have never seen so many people try to evade accountability for their actions in a thread as I have here. Talk about trying to deflect the question!

It's not anything near accountability for your actions as

NOT BEING TAKEN IN BY A CORRUPT BUNCH OF HYPOCRITES
toe the party line if you wish ...
I UNLIKE YOU HAVE A FUNCTIONING BRAIN

<< Hell, the way I look at it, if you buy legal drugs you're suporting the terror of runaway capitalism at it's worst. Look at the enormous profits of the phamacutical companies who justify their greed because of the "cost" of R & D. Right... >>

My grandmother was complaining that her Lipitor prescription costs $94 a month. However, it has lowered her cholestorol from the upper 200s to 145. That's fantastic effectiveness. Sure, $3 for a little pill may at first seem excessive, but consider the long-term savings. It is much cheaper to spend $94 a month on a wonder drug than suffer a stroke and endure tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills and long-term care and experience irrevocable physical damage on your body. You can't put a price on health and if it costs $94 a month to keep you healthy, then what's the problem? Our pharmaceutical companies produce products that save lives. I believe they are entitled to pursue the profit motive. Profit and human advancement are not two incompatible notions.

<< Profit and human advancement are not two incompatible notions. >>

Couldn't agree with you more. I am a small business owner - profit ensures production. How much profit and at what cost to the public is the issue to which I am refering.

It goes without saying that the pharmacutiacal companies produce wonder drugs. They also grossly enrich themselves. $94 for a single pill whose actual cost way paid for years ago is a sin - ethically, morally, any which way you want to cut it. Add to that their monopolistic trade practises and you have what many senior Anmericans enjoy today, the monthly delimma of choosing between what to eat or what prescriptions to fill.

Quality of life, anyone...

I said: 😉

Gosh, some of you people make me sigh and shake my head. The commercials said you could be supporting terrorism. When you say they shouldn't make blanket statements, all you do is demonstrate your ignorance as to the true importance of the message.

What you want is to ignore the fact that buying drugs supports the dregs of society. Drugs (in the large scheme of things) will kill FAR more people than bin Laden did on September 11. Get your heads out of your butts and take responsibility for your actions.

When you buy drugs, you do support addiction and death. If not monetarily, then by your additude.

And yes, even if it's pot.

yes, drugs do kill people and support the dregs of society. BUT alcohol is LEGAL and it KILLS A LOT MORE PEOPLE in the world than drugs.

As an American Taxpayer I've supported terrorism for Decades. Nicaragua, El Salvador, Iran (the Shah), Iraq in the 80's, Guatemala, Chile (Pinochet) etc... Hopefully we are beyond all of that but some how I doubt it.

Exactly!!!

This is the basis of our country, to make money. No Corporation is out there to lose money, yet you people want them to. If the price is too high, lower the demand. Find another way to cure your ailment. The pharmacutical company's are pricing it because they know people will pay for it. Its easier to take a pill rather than to stay healthy. Hell, i'd take pills rather than be active, and i'll pay for it. If you dont like it, move to some socialist country.

The funny thing about all of this, the same people who bitch that prices are too high complain about their taxes being too high. Either get cheap pills or low taxes, your choice.

<< So, let's drill for oil in Alaska already. Then my tank of gas will be going towards U.S. jobs and not Osama. >>

Ignorance!

<< As far as the Opium from Afghanistan goes, the people that profit from that are the Northern Alliance, a group that terrorised Afghanistan to such an extent that the Taliban was able to step in. Bin Laden's group are the remnants of the force that the US, Saudi Arabia, and England put together and armed in the 70's to fight the Soviets. >>

Exactly! The Northern Alliance produced 150 tons of opium last year. Nice ad!

<< Ignorance! >>

Hmm... last time I checked Alaska was still a part of the U.S. Did something change? 😕

The commercials were BS propaganda, pure and simple.

First, blanket statements do not work, 'nuff said on that.

Second, if illicit drugs were not illicit, we would know exactly where the money goes and statements like the one made in those commercials would be impossible. The fact that these illicit drugs are illegal alone is what creates most of the crime that surrounds them. Make them semi-legal, heavily regulated (as much or even more so than alcohol), problem solved. To those of who are for the Drug War, please remember that our country has tried Prohibition before, it caused a massive crime wave and failed, and that this prohibition is no different, except this time we just keep throwing more and more money at the same losing proposition.

Third, the Partnership for a Drug-Free America is primarily funded by major drug companies (excuse me, "pharmaceuticals"), in particular Johnson&Johnson via the William Ford Johnson Foundation. Obviously, having people medicate themselves is bad for profits, so they have used our government in order to legislate their market into existence. I seriously recommend that some people here study the history of allopathic medicine.

Fourth, unless someone can prove to me, definitively, how throwing someone in prison is the best way to protect them from themselves, or exactly why our country should pay more than $150 billion dollars each year to take care of other people's poorly-raised children, I will continue to be against the War on Drugs.

Fifth, no, I do not use drugs. Insults and ad hominem demonstrate poor debating skills.

>>

When you drive a car, you support abuse, drunk driving, and death. When you eat cheeseburgers at your fast food shop, you support gluttony, obesity, heart attacks, and death. See how many situations that ridiculous claim can be applied to?

As to the topic at hand, yes it is true that the majority of opium comes from from terrorist factions. According to here however, only 0.1% of the American population has tried opium/heroin within the month. That is all I will say about the issue

Actually the commercials are disingenuous not necessarily false. The Bush Admin is trying to shame people into giving up illegal drugs by linking them to terrorists in general (with the implication of linking it to 9/11 terrorists in particular. They know the truth is that much like our oil; the majority of our illegal drugs come from Mexico, Canada, and California (CA is a pot monster).

While I think people should be ashamed if they use drugs to the point of becoming dysfunctional, it is poor policy to use such a specious argument. This MO is part of the reason young people and the intelligent older people disregard many of our entreaties to modify their behvior, b/c we often wrap legitimate issues in terrible policy . . . ala "just say no".

As for pharmaceuticals, drug costs, and profit motive in health promotion.

This is the basis of our country, to make money. No Corporation is out there to lose money, yet you people want
them to. If the price is too high, lower the demand. Find another way to cure your ailment. The pharmacutical
company's are pricing it because they know people will pay for it. Its easier to take a pill rather than to stay healthy.
Hell, i'd take pills rather than be active, and i'll pay for it. If you dont like it, move to some socialist country.

Personally, I would like to believe the basis of our country runs a bit deeper than making money, but history may not be on my side. No one wants corporations to lose money. But pricing has little to do with what people are willing to pay unless you are poor. The inflation in drug costs have ranged in the teens to 20% for much of the past few years. Drug companies get away with it b/c of 3rd party payer systems (private insurance, company insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, etc).

Furthermore, direct marketing to consumers (plus lack of due diligence by physicians) has lead to "name brand prescribing practices. In particular, physicians are giving people what they ask for (having seen it on television) even though less expensive and often equally effective) drugs are already on the market.

As for pills vs doing the right things (exercise, balance diet, no smoking, and moderate alcohol); it's no contest. Much of the pharmaceutical industry is working on hype. We are not making sedentary, overweight, smokers, and drinkers healthy. But we can give that guy a mad boner and grow some fuzz on a bald dome. Many docs are just tired of telling people the same things (granted some docs do have poor communication skills) to control diabetes and high blood pressure. Plus many HMOs do not reimburse (the doc) for nutrition/exercise counseling but will pay if we prescribe meds. Eventually, we give up and go to the prescription.

As for your last comment. We all pay for drug discovery. Much of the basic research is funded through NIH grants. Then drug companies take revelations on the public dole and develop/test/market drugs. Yes, they risk a lot to bring drugs to market but ultimately most products have been subsidized significantly. And if you take a close look at our socialized medicine friend to the north and socialized foe to the south you will find they better the US in essentially all categorical measures of health . . . with the prominent exception of high-tech medicine. The problem with high-tech medicine is that a small portion of the population (elderly, premature babies, and chronically ill) consumes the majority of the resources.

<< If you dont like it, move to some socialist country. >>

Oh my, I haven't heard "America - Love it or Leave it" since Spiro Agnew & Crew.

<< Either get cheap pills or low taxes, your choice. >>

Americans don't have either. So what was your point, exactly?

When you eat cheeseburgers at your fast food shop, you support gluttony, obesity, heart attacks, and death. See how many situations that ridiculous claim can be applied to?

lol🙂 so true, and when you drive giant suvs/gas guzzling cars you support the oppression of women in the middle east AND terrorism. that beats drugs haha

Face it, those commercials were total Bullsh!t and who ever was responsible for them shouild be fired for wasting taxpayers hard earned money.

Yes, they were 110% Bullsh!t.

The answer to stopping illegal drugs is to legalize them. Price goes down, black market nearly disappears, if you want to stop you can go to people for help without the fear of simple being another "junkie criminal".

The war on drugs is dead. End it.
