that's true, debtor's prison + indentured servitude + war slavery was a big thing for thousands of years up until 200 years ago or so.

it's pretty fascinating to read 4-5000 year old documents and grammatically it sounds so modern, but at the same time makes all kinds of foreign assumptions like how city mayors are deities and people should be sacrificed to gods and everyone next to your land needs to be conquered and tortured and enslaved.

although a lot has changed in 5000 years, we are really not that physically or mentally different from them. one cataclysmic event and we could easily end up under such a system again.
