jury duty is a piece of cake. beingo on a grand jury is what sucks. my wifes best friend got selected for a grand jury last year. Its a 1 year tour and you meet twice a month at the court house after work, when she finally got dismissed in mid jan they gave her a check for 100 bucks.

I wonder if the process is like it is for a reason. Maybe we don't really want these buffoons with idiot answers serving on the jury to begin with. The people who feel a sense of duty or honor to serve, or are even financially capable of it, are probably going to give the process better attention. I'd rather somebody like that deciding my fate.

I've never been called but would do everything I could to represent myself well if I were ever called. I feel like it's part of my civic duty. Just my opinion though, I'm sure others have their own reasons for not ever wanting to be a part of the process.

I get jury notices, but I've never actually had to go to court for any of them to see if I'd be selected. I'd love to serve on an interesting case one day. My employer covers the pay so I have no issues with it.

last jury duty i went on was for a pedo case. when the lawyer asked a potential juror if she could be impartial, she said no. when asked why, she looked over at the defendant and said he looks like a pedo. judge dismissed her.

During jury selection for the rape trail, I was amazed at how many females felt the need to tell the lawyers they felt strongly about rape and were against it.

I wanted to stand up and shout, no shit? Because this side over here is PRO RAPE.

Thank you captain obvious!

Pretty disappointed to see certain people ITT who say they can't be bothered to serve on a jury, but don't mind enjoying the many benefits of living in this country.

We are certainly becoming a "what's in it for me" nation, with no thought of contributing.

been called 2x in the last 1.1 year (yep, 2nd summons sent nearly to the week of my previous summons the year before. :hmm:)

First time, went in, half of group was excused after an hour or so.
2nd time, checked status online the night before, saw that my summon time the next morning had already been dismissed.

:\

I get called into Oakland, too. So, sooner or later, something juicy is going to pop up.

Well, you know--the money for the public health plans of our beloved Congressmen has to come from some where. Never mind that about half of them will claim, in public and quite vocally, that no one deserves or is entitled to such a health plan, but they'll sure as shit take their taxpayer-funded plans to their graves.

Every single one of them.

Yeah that's another thing. Each time I've been called in for jury duty and had to miss work for it, the company I worked for paid the difference between the jury duty pay (which is like $10 a day iirc, been a couple years now) and a standard work day. This happened with two different companies, and not large ones by any means - one had about 130 employess and the other had 7 including myself.

I received a summons once so far, and went (my employer pays for all of my time off). There's actually an amusing (at least to me) story that goes along with it!

The case involved a guy that got pulled over for a DUI. The prosecutor is talking to the potential jurors, and he asks them, "is having a drink or two and driving the same as drunk driving?" Oh man, the answers I heard from this were majorly facepalm worthy. I think by about the fifth wrong answer (including equally awful explanations), I raised my hand.

The prosecutor chuckled a bit, and said, "Sir, you can't answer while in the audience, but don't worry... you'll get your turn!" He must have realized my frustration, because he finally just answered his own question after that. :p

Wrapped up coroners duty today. Had a homicide in town this morning (guy was shot in front of a school no less) that took up a lot of the coroners time. Was supposed to be let out at 5:00 but ran an hour and half over...couldn't get to daycare to pickup my daughter. Had to make my wife pack up and drive 20 miles into town to get her even though I was 2 miles away. Bleh. As I said earlier in this thread...it's just a pain in the ass.

It was interesting though. Definitely got a variety of cases. One of them was one of the craziest accidental deaths I've heard about in a while.

Jury Duty is just that - a duty. I have served gladly when called, even though I've never been assigned a particularly interesting case.

Those of you who don't like the duty: would you prefer a system without trial by jury?

edit: more OT, I saw a report on the local news this morning about the woman in the OP. She just doesn't understand how she possibly could be in trouble for lying to the judge...

My employer still pays me in full for the days I have duty. I can absolutely understand the anxiety towards it if you are an hourly employee missing a weeks worth of wages and your employer does not reimburse you for it. If all employers had a similar policy I would have a similar opinion as you. But not everyone has the ability to cover that weeks worth of lost wages waiting around to figure out if they'll ever be called to a case.

It's not really a what's in it for me mentality...it's more of a massive pain in the ass mentality because of the randomness of when you'll be pulled and complete mystery of what you will be able to do that week.

If the process was more streamlined and you had more control maybe it wouldn't be so bad. I don't know. I absolutely understand the reason and importance of having the luxury of trial by jury...but I also understand how big of pain that luxury can be to family or individual that has to try and work around that system.

I am paid but I have to give any money get for being on jury duty to my employer.

I'm all for the reason and priviledge of having a trial by jury...just loathe the massive amounts of wasted time just waiting around for nothing.

I don't know...maybe put people who are on unemployment at the top of the list or something and leave the rest to our jobs ;)

It's really just the process and uncertainty on when/how to plan for things when you more than likely aren't going to be doing anything at all that's frustrating.
