If XP's hardware changes...

If you change some hardware of XP, such as a new mainboard, will XP boot again? Will I have to format and start again? Are there any ways around?

I'm not upgrading, but am interested to knwo because I cannot use my friend's HDD and boot into it with my PC because all the hardware is different. So what if I was doing a major upgrade myself? That's why I ask.
