back in WWI and WWII, professional baseball stopped playing and fought in the war.

would the same thing happen today if hypothetically WWIII began?
would the eligible from the MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, etc. enlist in armed services, or would they be able to use their fame and wealth to somehow weasel out of it?

There would have to be a draft first. We have an all-volunteer armed forces. There would be nothing to be weaseling out of otherwise.

WWI and WWII were actually fought for a good reason.

If WWIII has anything to do with chasing around our shadows like the wars today, I'm not so sure :)

yeah, regarding a draft, that was assumed and implied.
basically would they somehow be able to use their status to become exempt somehow.

There are already some pro sports players in the middle east. Including the guy who died by friendly fire where the army lied about it.

Yeah, there would have to be a clear Tyrant and group of "axis" nations. Like say N. Korea invades S. Korea and starts slaughtering millions. When the US tries to intervene China, who's backing up N. Korea, summarily invades Japan and captures our military stations. Perhaps Putin will have managed to turn Russia back in to a Communist state and, having a pact with China and NK, they make a grab at the old fragmented Soviet states.

THAT would set shit off and you'd see people, celebrities and commonfolk alike, volunteering in droves.

WTF, WW1 was not legitimate, why would someone say that?

Anyway, Gooberlx2 has it right, I think.

A somewhat different perspective- Americans don't care what we do as long as it doesn't disrupt their lives/economy. If the public at large had to shoulder a burden for Iraq, then you can believe things would have been different. Right now the only cost the general public sees is at the gas pump.

Hah... yeah, and all the rappers would be lining up in their Escalades to serve their country too.

Seriously - it's hard to say without actually being in the situation. But a "world war" would be fought with technology more than manpower I think, unlike our current wars in the middle east which require the opposite.
