do i need to reinstall the nvidia drivers? the cards are 2 different brands gt is bfg and gtx is evga, but i used the drivers directly from nvidia's site for my initial gt install. Would i need to uninstall the drivers then put them back on or can i just swap cards?

im sorry but i have to ask,... why are you upgrading from a 7800GT to a 7800GTX?

if its because you like,. found it and would rather use the GTX,.. then just uninstal the driver before you take the card out,.. then instal teh card,.. then instal the latest driver (screw the cd for drivers get them from your gpu manufacturer, being evga.. or nvidia.com)

if your buying the GTX to replace your GT,... dont do that,.. just buy a second GT,put them in SLi,.. and smoke a single GTX consistantly all day long :) (for a hundred dollars less even,so if you dont have an sli motherboard, theres the extra cash for it right there)

I got the gtx at a really good price. I have an upgraded oem system (click my rig link) and i use dual monitors and dont game on a pc at all. That what my xbox 360 is for. i bought this because i can. and it'll last me a long long time. my last system had a radeon 9600 pro. had the gt for almost 3 weeks. it was great but im a sucker for good deals.

yes dad.

anyways i do alot of web design, photo and video editing on this system. thanks for answering my questions and telling me what to do. PERIOD

wanting a nice videocard for my other needs is not a crime. im an upgrade every 3 years type of guy when it comes to gpu's. this thread isnt called "should i upgrade my gpu" i've already have my gtx sitting on my desk. just wanted to get a few suggestions from someone that might know better than me.

To answer the OP's question, you'll be fine with the drivers you have. You might considering using newer drivers, but both cards will work fine on NVIDIa drivers.

lol...sorry, was cranky, my speakers were getting some interference and making that "zip zip zip" sound.

Drivers would probably work ok, but always a good idea to update them anyway.

Why not play it safe and just uninstall/reinstall the drivers. It will only take a few minutes...

Hey, its your money ... feel free to waste it any way you like! :p

Seriously though... if you don't game on your PC then theres no difference at all between those two cards... in fact you would be fine with a plain vanilla 6600 or similar... best bet is to sell both of them asap.

QFT.

Hey Pr0phetX, where do you live? I'm gonna sneak into your house and, ahem, save both cards from a life of mediocrity and free them to run in the higher MHz 3D mode for which they were designed. Don't worry, I won't leave you without. I'll make sure to drop in a 6200TC card - shhhh, you won't notice a difference in your above listed tasks. Oh wait, you will notice a difference... how much quieter your system is with one of these lower end passively cooled cards.

Then again, if I could afford it I would also... but I do play stuff.

Why the heck are you even wasting a 7800GT in that system if you don't game? Just keep your 9600Pro. The 7800GT won't offer any performance boost in web design/photo editing and video encoding..... Even a 7800GTX at a good deal is a big waste of money for you. I would send them both back.

Sell it to me for Quad SLI!!!!!!!! LOL ohh wait, that would be Tri-SLI and that wouldn't work:D Maybe I can just glue the card in between my SLI setup.. LOL

Serously, just uninstall then reinstall the drivers man, that's your safest bet..

I won't tell you what to do... but I will say that you might as well smoke 100 dollar bills like cigars.

Please for the sake of mankind don't upgrade, if your money is burning your fingers give it to charity or something (unless you wanna send me your 7800gt to replace my 6800nu :)))))

The 7800GT and GTX use the very same driver, so their would be no need to re-install the driver except that you might be really be behind on driver versions, In fact since the performance of the GT and GTX are so close together I am willing to bet you would see a greater increase in performance with the driver upgrade then the swith from the GT to the GTX. In fact as much as I love my GTX if the GT was available at the time of purchase I would have gotten that and added a second (by now) for SLI goodness.

OP- just horrible horrible purchasing decisions. You say you upgrade every three years, and yet you replace a 6 month old 7800GT with an equally old GTX that only outperforms it by a small amount and YOU DON"T GAME??? I know you already have the GTX, and you claim it was a great deal, so sell it. Sell the 7800GT as well, and buy a X1600pro. Use the $$$ to buy games for your Xbox 360 as soon as something decent to buy comes out. I know you didn't ask for my advice on the card, but then you didn't need to throw out your "The PC isn't for gaming, the 360 is" line. Frankly enjoy your crippled processor and your overheating-prone form factor. at least you can take solace in your GPU....or could have at the time of the console announcement. Arguably, PC video cards have already exceeded the GPU in the 360.

The driver install takes like 5 minutes, so yes, just reinstall them.
