Duck is much tastier, anyhoo, as are guineafowl, and are more interesting variations from chicken during the year. They are a more modest size, also.

Thats the point of thanksgiving in the US. Get together with a bunch of family and give thanks for what you have. We had 15 people over and the 18lb bird was just the right size. Only took 3 hours to prep and cook. We didn't need one bird per person but you can be sure we all brushed our teeth that night something you might want to think about.
 
Whole turkey and eggnog are like sex with your wife of 30 years -- absolutely wonderful on those 3-4 special times of year, but too much effort otherwise.
 
My dad works for Jennie-O (Hormel) so we get turkey all the time... ($1 for a whole turkey and for sliced deli meat turkey it's $3 I believe)

So needless to say, we're turkey'd out! (Although it is damn good most of the time)
 
Then Americans would all be sumo wrestlers, and we would have the largest population on Earth based on weight alone.
 
IThere are brands like Louis Rich that make turkey products year round, if you like turkey. I personally dislike turkey and am glad my family makes steaks instead on Thanksgiving.
 
I love turkey and whenever I feel like eating it during the rest of the year, I pester Zenmervolt to make one on the grill. 🙂

On the other hand, the only good eggnog I've ever had was homemade, and that stuff is so rich and takes so many eggs to make, it's not worth it the rest of the time.
 
Probably because how long it takes too cook it (defrost, prep, and actual cooking time - which requires a lot of attention, because you can't just leave it in the oven and not baste it).

As for eggnog... i don't know... i like it, but i wouldn't want to drink it all year round... i get sick of eggnog after near the holiday is over.

Took my turkey out once to cover the breast with foil. Other than that it stayed closed the entire time. It was the juiciest and most beautifully browned bird I have ever eaten.

Basting is completeley unnecessary and does nothing but extend the cook time by letting the heat out of the oven.
 
I do eat turkey all year. I prefer turkey to beef, so I use it instead of ground beef, and I use turkey on sandwiches and such all the time.

As for egg nog, it would cease to be such a great treat if you drank it everyday. Part of what makes it desireable is it's scarcity most of the year.
 
I make a turkey on my grill usually 2 or 3 times per year .....

It's just so damn good when it's cooked at like 250-300 degrees for several hours with bacon on top of it dripping all over the place ....

mmmm turkey.


EDIT: also, Corn on the cob!
