If true conservatives leave the Republican Party what would be the real differences between the Democrats and Republicans? If the Republican Party keeps moving towards more moderate or liberal policies to regain popularity where do conservatives get a voice in government?

The only things I can think of at this time are abortion and business agendas.

They remain socially at odds with each other, economically they'd both continue to raise spending, just on different things. Except the Republicans would still claim they're "fiscally conservative".

The only true fiscal conservatives were the founders and the most recent one was Barry Goldwater. There hasn't been a real conservative since.

Reagan was a conservative in name only. Why some people idolize him is sometimes puzzling. His whole 'keynesian-voodoo economics' bullshit is what got us to where we are. Not to mention that a lot of the neo-cons that we see today got their footing in the Reagan administration.

Mark Sanford looks very appealing and hopefully he'll run in 2012.

i dunno if you could really call him a Keynesian, he, and bush II were more supplysiders. These aren't incompatible on all issues, but still based around very fundamentally different goals and methods.

Here is the problem, others will say its about strong military and foreign polcy (clearly incompatible with small government), and others will say its about certain religious and moral values.

Furthermore, i don't think 'small government' really sells well any more. The post Vietnam anti-government generation is dying.

Exactly what we had for 8 years under Bush

Bush wasn't and isn't conservative he has been and always be a moderate, but I feel McCain is worst. The last true conservative leader we had in Washington was Newt Gingrich.

I agree with you Red Dawn. While I'm a Christian and use my beliefs for personal decisions I don't think government should adopt any religious theme for governing. Who am I or anyone else for that fact to force another person to adopt my beliefs or live by them? God gave us all free will to decide for ourselves how we choose to live. And by those choices we will be held accountable by God. Now if you don?t believe in an afterlife, or at least the way it is described in the Bible, you still have you own conscience to contend with.

I don?t believe in anarchy either.

Who are these fabled true conservatives? I see a lot of bleaters on this board who pretend to be fiscally conservative but then supported the waste of money that was the Iraq war.

Collect a lot of money from your followers, use said money to convert people to increase your number of followers.

I don't know, that sounds like a really good business plan.

OK, but they will lose a large portion of their base and will not win elections, even if a large number of swing voters vote for the New republican party.
