I remember a few years back, there was actually a company that wanted to do this. Their plan was to build an exact, functioning replica of the ship for historical transatlantic tours. The ship celebrates it's 100th anniversary this year, as construction started in 1911.
This ship would be a near exact replica. The rooms would look the same, the ship itself would look the same. Every detail would be meticulously replicated, except...
-it would comply with modern maritime safety regulations
-it would have the required amount of modern lifeboats by 2011 standards
-it would be equipped with modern navigational systems and a computerized bridge, complete with radar and GPS.
-it would be equipped with modern diesel-electric engines including bow thrusters, making it more maneuverable.
-it would be constructed of modern materials, making the ship's hull stronger.
So, would you do it, or would it be tempting fate?
