IF there were a draft...

In its present condition, with no idea when you'd be back, fighting in contested territory as a ground soldier, would you do your best to dodge the draft?

No, I would probably allow myself to be 'drafted' and then commit acts of subversion once on the inside.

We'd be gone. Fvck the Christian Taliban. No one in my family is going to die for Jesus, Haliburton, Oil, Dubya, or any of their other BS causes.

If I was single, that'd be what I'd do, but I have other considerations now.

Well... seeing as how I'm already in Canada that about wraps things up. If Canada was ever in a situation where our nation was being directly threatened by an enemy, I'd be proud and honored to fight for my country.

Eh, that doesn't count. I'm trying to keep it topic specific.

Well I didn't vote if that's what you're wondering. I can't imagine Canada getting into something like what you're describing. However, if that's what happened I'd probably take my lumps. There's alot of unknowns in you question though. If it was so that Paul Martin could rule over Bermuda (or any other brain dead reason) then I would think that I along with most other Canadians would refuse to be apart of it. But if it was because some African country was slaughtering another, or if the Mafia was threatening to bomb our cities because we made it tougher to import drugs, well then yes, I would participate and enjoy my time at it. You only live life once.

Depends on the war really. Iraq? Nope.

Though I'm not surprised to see we have people like Dissipate and EatSpam who admit that they'd be traitors and get fellow soldiers killed on purpose.

I would be reluctant to go into any war; but I would most definately need to believe in the cause before I was willing to put my life on the line.

Therefore Iraq: No.

Reluctantly I'd go. The draft would probably never happen again due to all the complaints about it during Vietnam.

Well I've got two kids (10 months and -7 months). But it's probably prudent planning since by the time they are 18yrs old . . . we will still be talking about how the fudge to get out of Iraq.

I would imagine the draft would exclude me b/c I'm still in residency. But it would suck for all those late-20s MDs that just finished residency.

A colleague (child psychiatrist) narrowly avoided deployment to Iraq less than a year after a 6 month deployment to Afghanistan.

I have a dual citizenship so I would conveniently leave the country for a while and stay away for as long as I have to. Either that or I would injure myself on purpose. For anyone who has something bad to say about this: Fvck you. Better you getting blown up by a roadside bomb than me.

My entire family has already decided on an extended vacation to Canada or some other country that will begin the moment the draft starts.

EDIT: This assumes we're talking about Iraq, of course.

And if I were in my forties or fifties, I would be there. I was in SEA, latin America, Bolivia for war on drugs, etc. Just too old for the stress of combat and don't have the stamina I once did. That doesn't mean I can't admire and envy the troops who are involved and resent the cowards that wouldn't fight for anything at all.

i might not move, especially not to canada since that is no longer a safe haven, but i would have no problem incapacitaing myslef indefinately or pretending to be gay.

I would go, but neither reluctantly nor with gusto. Hell, I volunteered to go to Iraq as recently as last summer.

I would take extraordinary measures to prevent my child from being drafted to go to Iraq.

1) Not eligible to return to Military Service.

2) Have children on active duty, not my business to influence them.

Add these to the choices.

Hell no, they won't go. I will not have my kids die for Bush's Folly.

When there is real need, that is another matter.
