If the Xbox360 renders games in 720P, and it doesn't support HD-DVD then..

how would the CGI pre-rendered movies look? HD quality video normally clocks in around 19.5 mbps, which i'm gonna assume a standard DVD drive will not be able to keep up with. Not only that, the capacity of a standard DVD disc will most definately limit the amount of video they can add to a disc.

I think it will be very odd to have games look sharp and clear looking in 720P and then have cut-scenes being played back at 480i?😕

they had mentioned that a future revision of the 360 might include a HD-DVD, but game will never be release on HD-DVD dics.

I would imagine game with go the route of the N64 and NOT use FMV. Everything will be real time rendered.

Cutscenes are already looking crappy on my PC versus in-game graphics. Example: Splinter Cell 3.

Wouldn't it make sense that if the real-time rendering & game engine exceeds the cutscene quality they would just render their cutscenes realtime?

Viper GTS

In the recent years, most of the whole CGI cutscene stuff has been done from japanes developers, not as much on the American based companies. However you can clearly see from the DOA4 intro video they are doing some type of CGI stuff. But as you can also see with Gears of War, its using in game engine to real time render the cutscenes.

I would expect them to just use real-time engines. However the DOA4 trailer is available in HD already, which includes the opening CGI sequence. I wonder if this will be in HD when the game comes out in a few months ...

Only if the task in the cutscene is easier to produce with the in-game engine. Lots of in-game engines have limited animations which really hurts when it comes cutscene time. They can't make some guy flip over a railing or dive or even sit down properly, so they do it in a cutscene instead of adding all sorts of additional modeling animations.

1. They are using WMV9, which only uses 7-8Mbps for 720p and 4-5MBps for 480p.
2. Pre-rendered 480p cut scenes will look the same as current DVD movies.

Read MS's reasoning for backing HD-DVD. They can release hybrid(HD-DVD / DVD) discs that can be read in regular DVD players and HD-DVD players. The regular 9GB DVD section can have 480p video and the extended 30GB HD-DVD portion can have the same video available in 720p for HD-DVD capable players.

Another example--Sudeki. The cut-scenes seem to have been copied directly from the X-box version, and even accounting for that the quality of them compared to in-game is still abysmal.

thanks for the clarification klah.

in that case, if they do indeed use WMV, then I can see the cut-scenes (if any) will look just as good as in game rendering.

Unless theres hours of it, they could easily fit a good amount of full hd in the room left over on a regular dual layer dvd.
