1) STEEP GM discounts. The practically give the cars away
2) A good portion of GM car sales are to rental agencies. I think somthing like 45-50% of Malibu sales are to fleet agencies compared with 3% for the Accord and 10% for the Camry.

Here we go with that term again....overpriced to whom?? you? really the car is not that expensive...overpriced compared to what??

I think their exterior aesthetics and low cost allow some to overcome the interior deficiencies ...personally I like the look of them...if I was looking for a mid sized japanese sedan I might consider one.

A fully loaded Altima is in the area of 28,000

thats overpriced, period...

who can or cannot afford it makes little difference, you need to apply the concept of "bang for your buck"... if your looking for a fast car, then you'd be looking at the WRX or something like it...so please don't feed me the line of how great the engine is. The altima is a family car, and family cars SHOULD have nice interiors, especially givin the hefty pricing of a nicely loaded 3.5 SE.

I'm surprised more Malibu's don't sell... initial quality surverys put it ahead of Honda's Accord and Toyota's Camry.. at least that is what I read in an article the other day.

Well, as NFS4 mentioned, only 20% of sales of the Altima are the V6 version.
The V6 trim starts at $23K MSRP. So the percentage of cars FULLY loaded and actually selling for $28K is going to be minimal.

Another reason why the interior isn't the greatest? For a base price of around $27K Nissan is offering the Maxima - which is similarly sized, based on the same platform, and has a variant of the same engine.
A far nicer interior is one of the "incentives" to step up.
