If the Feds Cashed My Tax Return Check...

This year my tax return was a lot more complicated and I was unsure if I filed everything correctly. If they cashed my check already does that I'm in the clear?

No

Nope, they'll bill you if they want more. But they sure as hell won't tell you if you made a mistake in their favor.

I'm a little concerned. My federal was cashed a while ago, but my state still hasn't been cashed. I sent them both out back in march. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah...Only the federal was cashed. My state was not cashed either. I guess California is a little slow. How long will it be before I know I'm in the clear?

You'll NEVER know for sure. But you'll have reasonable assurance April 15, 2007.

Incorrect. My brother made a mistake in math and the IRS let him know that his return would be bigger than he originally filed.

You've never heard of an audit? 😛

EDIT: I believe one of the previous posters was correct. They have 7 years to come get more from you.

Feds have 3 years, unless they prove fraud.

Actualy not true. A few years ago I recieved a check from the IRS out of the blue. It was a refund I was owed from 2 years before. Due to an error on my part, I did not get back as much as I should have.

Yep, it has happened to me as well. At least the IRS pretends to be honest😛
