If the computer goes into standby, will downloading stop?

Basically, if I'm downloading a large file and then put the computer into standby, will the downloads automatically stop, or does something else happen? Like do they resume after standby?

I'm using Windows XP Home SP2.

Thanks.

I don't think so. I would use a DL manager. Nettransport2 is a good one.

So basically, the downloads completely stop no matter whether its ftp, p2p or html? Do they resume after stand by or do they just get canceld?

Standby is Suspend To Ram, which means that almost everything except the ram is unpowered.

They will stop, as the machine is effectively turned off.

The downloads should resume, but it depends on the server in question. I would suggest that WWW downloads will fail, as the remote server will time out. P2P should resume, but will have to reconnect to the tracker & the peers.

Yep I understand. Thanks guys.

Is there some sort of way to force a program to run will in standby? As in move it into the ram and then delete it from the ram when resuming. So I can run Windows Media Player or something while in stand-by.

No.
You cannot run programs while the machine is in standby, in the same way that you cannot play basketball when you're asleep :p

Think about it ;)

OK, but if the ram is running, I though you could load the program into it.

Thanks anyways.

it doesnt work like that. I would also assume that your cpu goes into some low power mode as well, so it most likely wouldnt be executing instructions

What about hibernation? Can programs still run with that or is it an even deeper sleep?

Yes, in hybernation, everything is shut down I think. Everything is stored via HD.

Right click on the NIC in Device Manager and goto properties, under power management untick the option that is something like "Allow to be stopped by power management" and voila

My PC is bittorrenting everynight in sleep mode. (note not hibernation)

Awesome! But can that damage the NIC due to excessive use?

EDIT: I cant find the power managment option. I'll keep looking.

EDIT2 : Damnit! I have Intel Pro Wireless 802.11g in my laptop. There is no option for power managment but there is for my Realtek Ethernet :( What do I do?

Then it's not in an S3-STR sleep state.

In STR (Suspend To RAM), the contents of the memory are maintained with a very small feed from the PSU. Everything else is switched off. No CPU. No hard disks. Nothing.

If your machine is still running BT when it's in sleep mode, then it's not in sleep mode.
