It sounds like a stupid question but, hey, this is bleeding edge high tech stuff.

No; it sounds like (from some reviews I read) that NVIDIA would put out wrapper codecs that let you use the card's video processor to encode/decode video. Of course, when this happens (and how well it works) are still up in the air, but it sounds promising. You could, I suppose, uninstall the 'regular' codecs, though I'm not sure why you'd want to do that anyway.

If the card encodes / decodes video as well as a fast P4 (and supports the formats you want/need), possibly. It would certainly take much of the load off the CPU even if it wasn't quite as fast.
