If someone yells at someone, can they file a police report? No threats were made, but the confrontation was pretty intense.

as long there's no fist flinging, junk throwing, spitting, stabbing, etc (including threats)...

let it resolve peacefully?

verbally yelling...as opposed to non-verbally yelling?

seriously though, someone yelled at you, grow a sack...there's no need to call the cops because someone yelled without even making a threat

..for what purpose? Sure you can call the police.., but if it's just because someone yelled at you, don't expect much to happen.

LOL, saw that, there wasn't an option to let me fix it.

The confrontation doesn't involve me, but the attack came from a bipolar freakazoid. I figure it may be worthwhile to have something on record in case the situation escalates later on or if there is another incident.

It wouldn't hurt to give them a heads-up. A department the size of mine would let the guys know so we're aware of what's going on. A department the size of Miami might not care. :p

Can they? Sure. However, it's against the law to file a false police report which implies filing falsely is possible. What law or ordinance or whatever is being broken? Noise ordinance, maybe? There are too many variables in this hypothetical situation :p

Thanks. Wasn't quite sure what action can really be taken by officials. I figure that if a second incident were to occur that included threats or actual violence, then the first report on file would prove more beneficial than none.

Based on what you've said, don't expect them to do anything at all. Again it'll depend on the agency, but in a small town, it's not a bad thing to know there's a bipolar guy going around who may fly off the handle.

You don't have to worry about 'filing a false report'..that's for reporting something that didn't happen (or lying about something that did). It sounds as if there was no crime involved here (maybe disorderly conduct depending on the circumstances), but if you have any reason to believe he may become violent (and if you know the guy's name), it wouldn't hurt to give the police department a heads-up. Again I am coming from a small town perspective, not a metro area.

Do you suspect that this confrontation will escalate into violence? If yes, you have an obligation to call the police. If no, leave it.

the cops arent going to charge someone with a crime if what they said wasnt criminal but if you felt threatened it wouldnt hurt to report it. i was in a restaurant yesterday and someone in there called the cops because there was a guy in the parking lot yelling to himself and they came out and checked it out

Why call police, when you can sort it out yourself? In the future, police is no longer going to be there, son.

:confused:

Filing false report = lying != filing report where no laws were broken

My understanding is that yelling alone is not a crime, but making threats could be a crime.
