If someone told you to pick a car for $15K, newer than 2002 and less than 40K miles, what would you get?

The topic is relatively self-explanatory. The target point is around $15K, any car is fair game, but the mean sale price for that kind of car, in good condition, must be within $1-2K of that. At that price point, the car should be newer than 2002 and have <40K miles.

I'm only really considering passenger cars that are usable - no two-seaters, and reliability is a factor - I'd be less inclined to favor a domestic over an import at the same price point. I'd like some performance over comfort.

A decent Honda, Toyota or we're looking at a Jetta TDI (~45 - 50 mpg) right now.

WTF is with the recos on econoboxes. You can buy a new, lifeless econobox for $15k.
