if they stole it from you then they're not the owners, so I think you can steal it back. If this is an item with a receipt, obviously if you have the reciept then you have proof of ownership. However, breaking and entering is a different story

Not really. It's my video card, kidnapped when I let someone "test it out for compatibility" and now avoids me at every turn. He won't respond to any of my 15 IMs and is always "too busy" to talk. No ransom has been demanded for its release.
