Eh, I used immortal as a word of convenience (inspired by a digg article that used the word about some new medical developments). My intent was that you would not age and die. You could still die in other ways.

I would choose immortality and was already planning on not having kids.
 
Immortality and no kids (otherwise I'd plan to have kids)

It's not really a hard question for me. I'm scared to death of death. I wouldn't like watching loved ones die, but they wouldn't have to die if they took the treatment. Some of them would almost certainly choose to forgo treatment in favor of kids though. Maybe I'd spend some of my time following the goings on with the rest of my family (those who chose to have children) through their many generations, so I'd never really get completely disconnected from family life. Although I can't imagine it now, eventually I'm sure I'd get bored enough to choose to die on my own terms...or maybe not. In any case, 70-100 odd years isn't nearly enough for me. I want to see what happens far in the future dammit!

Then another problem exists- who gets this option? I can see wars fought over this.

First the world needs to address its over population problem- this might be a part of it. Sterilization would not be an option (unless by choice).

Yep. And imagine the wars between mortals and "ageless" people. Ageless would probably be upperclass and control most of the economy, if they put 3% compounding interest a year, in 100 years they would be pretty rich even if they only invested 10k.
 
Immortal = don't age or suffer from age related medical conditions but can still die (like vampires)
Eternal = never die no matter what (like a god)

So since most people will croak from an accident anyway, I'd just have children
 
Yes. I'll take the risk of unexpected death from an accident. I'm coll with no kids. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have some little Mason's someday but it's not that big of a deal. In exchange, I have to opportunity to live a long time and see the progression of the world. Hell yeah. Just don't get married and it's all good.

what if you already had kids when they discovered it? if that were the case, id say yes. if it were before, id say no.

as i was growing up, i never thought being a dad would be for me, and i wasnt really that nice or good of a person. kids was the best thing that happened to me, they teach me as much about life as i teach them. besides, there has to be new life in society, otherwise civilization would stagnate and eventually destroy itself

This. Outliving everyone you love would make you the most jaded person in the world. You'd either become a zombie out of coping with the pain, or you would probably forgo becoming attached to anyone because of the inevitable pain. Or you'd just be friends with other immortals, so you'd be lonely as part of a separate, exclusive social class.
 
now here's a question, say you choose immortality, and you live until the sun supernovas and the earth dies with it. would you still be alive?
 
No immortality and no kids. If I am alive I have to eat, if I have to eat, I have to work. Immortality = working endlessly.
 
The only reason I'd have kids is for my parents. There are enough morons now and I doubt my kid would make a difference.
