If photon torpedos are antimatter, shouldn't it be a positron torpedo?

I just thought about this recently. "Photon" torpedos doesn't really make sense.

by the way, I haven't liked a star trek series since Next Generation 😛

let's pretend it's called photon torpedo because when they fire it, it lights up, emitting photons into space.

I would assume that a "photon torpedo" is exactly that, some sort of high powered photon pulsing device, but in the Star Trek series they are actually little torpedo-like things.

Hmm.. Interesting. Anyone got an answer for this, or did photon torpedo just sound cool? lol

Positrons are just anti-electrons. Antimatter is made up of positrons, anti-protons, and anti-neutrons. So I think antimatter torpedo is the most correct.

So, since antimatter actually exists, and IIRC we've actually created some(?), when are we going to see warp drive? 😉

Or at least dilithium powered cars............

😛

As soon as we invent the magical device to turn normal matter into antimatter without using a huge particle acceleratior and requiring enough energy to power a small city to make a handful of the stuff. 😉

Well... What are you waiting for?! Get on it!

You mean enough energy to power a large city?

I think positrons can be made pretty easily. PET scans use them somehow.

Photon Torpedo:

Starfleet standard weapon containing two equal parts of matter/antimatter. On contact with a target, matter and antimatter mix, creating an explosion.

Quantum Torpedo:

Creates a artificial singularity on contact. Disgustingly powerful.

So why exactly is it called a photon torpedo?

So how does it travel faster than light, and how is it targeted precisely enough to in effect hit a grain of sand moving at relativistic speeds from across the other side of the solar system?

Don't you hate questions like this? 😛

they probably have computers in them that would make all of our supercomputers combined look like a calculator to them

While most of the energy from matter-antimatter reactions is released as neutrinos, billions of neutrinos passed through your body and the Earth as you read this message. Their energy isn't useful for power or explosions; of the remaining accessible energy released from matter-antimatter annhilation, most is released as photons.

General relativity allows for warp drives, but you need exotic (negative mass) matter to construct one and we've never found or been able to produce any exotic matter.

You may say that, but I don't believe it. The explosive effects simply aren't that visually impressive. Something "disgustingly powerful" should have an impressive explosion. It's the first rule of special effects...

They go faster than light by having some warp field sustainer hardware or something. If you fire them at warp, they will leave the ship at warp and decelerate over time. If you fire them at sublight speed, they don't go very fast.

wow, leave it to someone with quark in their name to have the right answer (I guess) 🙂

in theory, there should be equal amounts matter and antimatter n the universe. I think they behave almost exactly the same way, except they turn into pure energy in contact with each other.

Maybe its posisble some of the galaxies we see in the night sky are made up of anitmatter like ours is made of matter.
