If people are allowed smokebreaks, should non-smokers be allowed some sort of break?

An old co-worker (Bob) had a great solution for the person we worked with that always seemed to need extra smoke breaks. We were all doing system support.

The smoker would take breaks on a regular schedule. So Bob would wait until the smoker headed outside, then he would ask the boss a question that he knew the boss would need to ask the smoker about. Eventually the boss came to believe that the smoker was always smoking, since Bob kept giving the boss reasons to look for him when Bob knew he'd be outside.

After a while, the smoker got canned.

thats mean!

Yeah, some people work just to get others fired like that it seems. Instead of putting time into work, they put time into finding ways to piss people off or get them fired.

so true.
sooner or later those troublemakers usually end up finding themselves behind the 8 ball.
nobody is perfect.ever.
great job getting the dude canned! you probably temporarily ruined his life.
karma is a bitch.

they don't call it a smoke break for us... it's just a break. People just tend to smoke.

I smoke... I only take a 15 minute lunch, I also very seldom make or receive personal phone calls at work,I also don't sit down and spread my bills out and work on my day planner for 1/2 hr at a time like some folks.

But we're all on Salary here so if you do your job and your manager is happy with your performance than good for them. Same for me.

Same thing with Parents, should they get more sickdays compared to Single folks / no kids families? Probably not, but, that's just how it is. If you don't like that, have kids so you can take days off to pick them up from school and go to the doctor, etc. :p

What about all those co-workers who surf the net all day... you know who I'm -- oh, wait... never mind.

Enough complaining, back to work.

Parents get more sick days at your work? I've never ran into that situation. If I did, I think I'd be pissed.

I take internet breaks instead of smoke breaks. Actually, I guess it would be more accurate to say I take work breaks from my internet usage...

We already do, it's called the 20 extra emphysema-less years we'll have at the end of our lives to enjoy seeing our grandchildren grow up and live in the lap of luxury down in a warm climate. Granted, our underpants will constantly be full of feces, but that's a small price to pay.

WTF? You should be able to. At least i do... take walks, go for a drink, rub one off quickly in the washroom, etc.

Sounds about par. Everywhere I worked from a video store, grocery store, forensic laboratory, toxicology laboratory basically had 2 15 minute breaks plus unpaid lunch break.

Some people need 8 hours a day to get their jobs done. Some only need a few of those hours. Depends on the person and the job.

Don't worry as a non-smoker, you'll collect all the extra time at the end of your life.

I just surf the internet, but I leave a bunch of database windows opened and cascaded so it looks like I'm working hard.

non-smokers DO get breaks. Except, instead of "smoke breaks", they're called "decades-of-healthy-retirement-and-lower-medical-bills" breaks, and you get them after you stop working.

Labor laws say one 10 minute break for every 4 hours worked per day.

Hmm. Utah is 15, plus 30 minutes for lunch.

Ah, cool. I forgot that Oregon also requires 30 minutes minimum for lunch on an 8 hour day. Details schmetails. ;)
