If one uses home Wifi internet, then what is the point of a data plan?

I only use Wi-Fi (sans data plan) with a T-Mobile phone too. Nokia navigation does not require data.

Does a data plan only apply if you're using the Web via the mobile operator?

The carrier does not supply the internet, as this is an ISP not a mobile telephony operator. So how then would a data plan to the mobile operator apply?

I'm asking since I use my home wifi on my phone, and this is not run by my mobile carrier.

If you never leave the house (and your home internet or power never goes out when you want to surf on your phone), then you do not need a data plan.

Having a smartphone without a dataplan is like buying a car without wheels.

If you're not gonna have a data plan you don't need a smartphone.

Horrible analogy.
Without wheels, you can drive the car and thats its main purpose.
Without data, you can still use your smartphone to make calls and that its main purpose. Plus you can use data when you have wifi.
Not to mention you can use your smartphone for viewing pictures, video games, music, videos, take pictures, video recording, organizer, etc...

One may also be able to use data on a cost per use basis.
