Question If NVidia is bringing back the GTX 1050 ti 4GB, AMD should bring back the Polaris RX 560 /550 4GB, full-stop.

Discuss.

Otherwise, AMD is going to bleed discrete GPU market-share, due to lack of production.

The 1050ti is made on a less popular Samsung process, which must have some capacity available. Polaris chips would be competing with IODs for Zen chips, or 14nm APUs- I don't think there's capacity to spare there.

The more that I think about it... I think AMD is already doing this! Based on the number of OEM PCs selling with RX 550 cards in them. AMD just doesn't bother to divert any of them to retail, and honestly, the RX 550 is APU-level weaksauce, it would have to be a 1024-shader RX 560 card to make any real impact on the low-end gaming retail market IMHO.

But the RX 550 / 560 die should be small enough, to be: 1) cheap to make, and 2) have great yields these days. It should be a slam-dunk.

You’ve already answered the question to some degree though - the 550 is still alive for OEMs. It’s just not a great card for 3D.

Bigger problem, imo, is that the 550 is about half the performance of the 1050ti, the 560 two thirds. The 1050ti splits the difference between the the 560 and the 470 and is just a more powerful card. I don’t think more 550/560s is really the answer.

More 4GB 570s would be a better response right now, imo.

AMD should bring back the 580 8g. It is a great card for mining, even now ( about 27 MH ). Get the miners to buy a bunch of those so we can get the newer stuff.

Mining Ex:
One of my rx 580's is running 26 MH @ 100 watts.
A rx 6800xt only hashs 64 mh @ 240 watts,* and costs >3x more.
A rtx 3800 hashs 97 mh @ 250 watts**

All AMD needs to do is dump rx580s on the cryptoscene to both dominate the cryptomarket and let us gamers buy the good stuff. That was a $200 card years ago, and these days we see them on ebay >$400***.

Miners are still going to go for new cards. 580 gets 27Mh per 120W, 3060ti gets 60Mh for the same 120W.

Great point. However, one important detail ;):
I am trying to buy a 3080 or 6800xt, not a 3060ti.

But now that I know the 3060ti is the mining card to have perhaps I should reevaluate ( ... the dark side calls )

Hate to break it to you, but 3080 is another miner darling, it does 90Mh on 200W meaning it's as profitable as 3060ti but 3080 allows for greater density which is actually a plus. As far as 6800XT goes, they're nowhere to be found. My local microcenter regularly gets 30 series shipments, if you line up 5 hours before opening you'll get nvidia card. I asked sales associate if they had AMD cards and he practically laughed at me.

I am pro dumping as many cards into the market as humanly possible from every recent gen from any source manufacturers can get their hands on.

Unfortunately, it looks like AMD/NV have wised up and are not reflexively pumping stuff out during a mining boom.

Is there any value in GTX 650 1GB cards? (Do those have GDDR5, or GDDR3, or what? They're EVGA models, I think.)

I bought some @ $59.99 ea. on ebay last night.

I don't know if these are better or worse for really "light" gaming (*e-sports), or whether or not they will play Fortnite on Low, or whether they are any better than the Intel HD610 or HD630 iGPUs on the Celerons or Pentiums respectively.

I bought some B560 boards, so that I can up the RAM speed on some G6400 Pentium CPUs. Maybe that will help their iGPU.

For the older, esoteric cards it's always tricky. I use Techpowerup to get an idea where everything may lies.

I mean, for some games Vega 8 is going to crush this (anything shader heavy, like Borderlands 3) but old games that are more fill rate oriented it should be fine.

Myself, I try to draw the line at the bottom being the R7 250/ 7750 and minimum 2GB for even "light gaming". GCN means drivers. I believe Kepler is still getting drivers but many newer games didn't optimize for it at all, meaning it aged much worse than any GCN parts from around that time. In general,, whether it was due to the Xbox One/PS4 being GCN parts or just a more forward thinking architecture GCN seems to have aged better from that specific point in time.

Anything GTX 950+ seems to swing back to nvidia.

I wouldn't have paid $60 for them. But these are crazy times. :)

Aren't those the ones that are usually getting the BIOS hacks applied by shady Chinese sellers so that they report as 4 GB Pascal cards?

There was a post about some of them a while ago: https://forums.anandtech.com/thread...and-even-featuring-them-in-their-ads.2589817/
This listing was from an E-cycler, purportedly, via their username, and they had pictures of an EVGA GTX 650 1GB card, and the contents displayed, still with their plastic, etc.

It was listed as "new open box".

It wasn't a china-seller.

I really hope the listing is legit.

Only 3 left, looks like they had 33 of them. Thankfully, not "endless supply", which would have indicated a scam.

Edit: One downside is the HDMI is mini-HDMI, and requires an adapter or the appropriate cable. Some laptops (really small ones) have mini-HDMI as well. Maybe I should pick up some of those cables.

Sigh. Tell me about it. As far as GPUs go, these days, $60 is still "cheap".

Granted, they're only 1GB VRAM, but it appears that it is GDDR5. But only Kepler 384 shaders, these really aren't much better than a GT 730 2GB GDDR5, are they? (Maybe they have 128-bit memory bus, whereas GT 730 2GB GDDR5 is only 64-bit?)

If they can play Fortnite, that will be the test, I guess.

Maybe I should do some benchmarking between the HD630 iGPU of the Pentium Gold G6400, with 2666 DDR4, 3200 DDR4, 3600 DDR4, and the GT 730 2GB GDDR5 (Zotac), and these GTX 650 1GB GDDR5 (EVGA) when I get them. Might be slightly informative, for people crazy enough to buy really low-end GPUs like myself.

$60 for a used 650 1GB? You'll have more memory bandwidth than a 730, but otherwise they'll be very similar.

This card chugged at 1080p when it was released just under a decade ago. It'll give you a display and let you play facebook games, but it's probably not pleasant for anything else. It's under the recommended system requirements even for Fortnite.

Larry, I don't mean to be funny, but you've wasted your money on junk cards. Sell them now while the market is still overinflated, and don't be stuck holding them when the bubble bursts.

@VirtualLarry Hey sorry I dont know how to DM you but I saw one of your replies to a problem regarding wifi and Ipv6 on Android. Some apps don't work using wifi but work using data, and you told the user to check ipv6. How can I fix this?

Yeah. I went and pulled up an old review of the EVGA GTX 650 and that card struggled to game at 1080p back in 2012. Of the games tested, the only one it got better than 30 FPS average in was Skyrim and not by much.

These are only really good to pair with a more recent AMD CPU that lacks dedicated video for someone who doesn't need to use the card for anything other than outputting to a display. Otherwise it's going to struggle. I'm not even sure I'd want to try a sudoku puzzle with one of those.
