If not Geforce2 GTS, what?

If a Geforce2 GTS graphics card is not compatible with your system, what AGP card would you choose?

EmosOohay - are you contemplating buying a new video card? If you give us a few more specifications of your current system, someone might be able to advise you better...

v5's are looking nice with the new drivers. Not truly and "agp" card though

Yea but a Geforce 2 GTS + 3dMark2000 = 7941 (default)

I would do major surgry and make it compatible...

My mobo doesn't supply enough current to the AGP to power a GF2. A ELSA Gladaic would not function (though I've tried). I wanted some ideas on the next best choice.

ATI radeon(witch you should have gotten in the first place

And why should I have gotten that in the 1st place? (other than it would probably work, minor detail I know)

As soon as I get credit for the non functioning Gladaic.

Motherboard: Tyan Thunderbolt S1837UANG / 440GX / AGP 2X / AMI Bios Version V2.00.09
Windows 98 SE 4.10.2222 A
Pentium III 500Mhz 128Mb
Creative PCI Live Audio Card

Thanks for the advice

The mobo doesn't supply enough current to the AGP slot for the GF2 (as far as I can gather).

What would you suggest?

Well, the Radeon uses less power than a GF2, but I'm not sure if it would be low enough. The V5.5K is not powered off the AGP slot. It uses a power connector off your power supply. Sounds like a cool option for you.

The redeon has beter image quality(a little 3d and alot 2d)and has alot more features, faster where it counts(32 bit high resolution)and I think it also has better t&l engine

Actually I would say that the Voodoo 5 has the best 2d display out of the GTS/Radeon/Voodoo5 - and it's 3D display is excellent as well. What's good about the Voodoo 5, is that it's 16bit 3D is far better than the competitors (IMHO), and so if you're not bothered about saying "oh I always run Quake in 32bit color"...you could run it in 16bit colour and it would still look great. The 16bit colour of a Geforce and a Voodoo 5 are quite a distance apart from what I've seen. Also, the Voodoo 5 5500 draws power from your PSU and not your motherboard so you shouldn't have a problem in that department and with the latest drivers offering some decent frame rate improvements, the Voodoo 5 5500 is still a great card (even though it doesn't match the raw speed/features of the GTS, or the 32bit colour speed and features of the Radeon).

BTW - what kind of games do you play?

Radeon is the short answer.

Longer form- Your mobo is GX based? It shouldn't have any problem at all supplying the board with enough power, particularly a GF2 which is quite a bit less demanding then the original GF boards. Could you list the symptoms that you were having?

GX based mobos are designed for workstations and servers, they shouldn't have anything running under spec, particularly not the AGP slot. Several pro boards have been stressing the AGP specs for some time, the GF based boars are just the first consumer options to do so. Any mobo based on the GX shouldn't have a problem with power, particularly considering how much they cost.

ATI Radeon easily. Stay away from 3dfx or you will get burnt.

Sorry, BFG. Don't agree. I have a Radeon 64, and am very happy with it (what's not to like?). I've also had 3DFX cards and have always had very good experiences with them. V5.5K and Radeon are both good choices. The only way I would tell someone to "stay away" from a V5 AGP is if they were running a BX133 setup (I am). The V5's, are not very happy with an 89 MHz AGP bus.

Yeah, I'm getting totally "burnt" by running Q3 at 1280x1024x32 resolution, and getting 54.5 fps.

Oh yeah, and I hate the "burning" smell that I emit when I get 77fps in the UT flyby, at the same resolution.

And omg, it's "burning" hot, when I run NFS5 at 1024x780 resolution with 4xFSAA enabled.

Get over it, BFG. Find some other hardware to bash irrationally, as this dead horse is getting boring.

I would much rather have a Radeon than some 3dfx product. At least ATI understand current technology and don't try to pretend that "you don't need" something.

The voodoo5 is great. If you haven't seen it's FSAA then you really don't know what you are missing. It makes a huge difference. Get the V5 5500!

Sounds to me like you really want the GTS. Why not consider changing the Mobo if you know thats the problem. Just as a sideline, what PSU are you using?

;)

ATi's T&L engine is probobly much slower than NVidia's because the drivers arent matured. JC said that Doom III will look worse on radeon's because they are missing a feature GF2's have. So much for it having more features. ATi also has horrible non win9x driver support.

3dfx dosent have true trilinear filtering whereas nvidia and ati do. Their opengl icd isnt too good either.

NVidia cards have poor 2d image quality due to use of cheap RF filters by board makers to save money. Their "poor 2d quality" seems good enough to me. Its not horrible but its not great either.

If power really is the issue on your mobo setup, then try running the fan on the GTS off of one of the fan headers on the motherboard. This should ease up power consumption from your AGP slot.

Just my $0.02. :)
