If my girlfriend's parents' tv has component inputs does that mean it is HD ready?

your talking about componet VIDEO inputs, right? As opposed to composite? I would think it would be rare for non hdtv or EDtv to have componet video.

Believe it or not.they exist. Some of the Panasonic Taus for instance.

My TV has component inputs and it's certainly not HD ready. You pretty much can't buy a TV these days without component inputs.

A component input in essence just splits the color channels into red, blue and green. Now the frequency at which it does it is what makes it HD ready...it must be able to handle 720p or 1080i to be HD-Ready....and up till a couple to few years ago, tvs had component but were not HD ready.

However, if the STB (set top box) converts the picture signal/frequency to 480p, using the component inputs will still give you a nice picture on non HD ready televisions. And most cable STB require you to use the component for HD, regardless of whether it is converting the signal or not.

AVS Forum will answer all of your A/V questions much more in detail then I can.

component is just a better quality input than s-video or composite. It has nothing to do with HD TV. All good quality standard definition televisions should have component input.
