yep. they have an entirely different range of communication, just as sophisticated as speech.

nearly all mammals communicate through gestures, vocalizing, scent, etc.

My cat had a vocabulary of about 12 main expressions. I could understand them all pretty easily just by sound alone.

* Hunger
* Really Hungry
* Quizzical
* Angry
* Really f'in angry!
* annoyed
* happy to see me
* Happy to see me and wants petting
* Surprised / WTF type expression
* WOW - CATNIP! GIMMEE!
* Scared as hell
* Anxious

And it's mostly from body language, smell, and voice inflection.

I could already understand quite a few of my cat's meows. If he wants something, he'll pace around it and meow with the ow going up in pitch. If he wants to cuddle, it'll sound like he's rolling his tongue on the me, and then ow going up in pitch.
If he doesn't like it, he'll make his meow go down in pitch.
