The pathetic truth in my opinion is that Christ was speaking to all of us. We are not the fishers of men, but those they came to save. We are the lost in need of redemption. It is the ego that makes us think we are the Christians whose duty it is to save, that we speak for Christ and are on His side. Jesus taught what character traits we should strive for to be Christians, not what characteristics we should point to to condemn other people. We are all deficient and should point only at ourselves. But it's such fun to play God, no?
The great obstacle every religion faces when the teacher is gone, is that the adherents believe they understand the message their religion was designed to teach that they have transcended instead of being at the bottom of the rung.
