I'm in the market for an ultraportable laptop to carry around for school. At this point the Latitude D420 has the price/features/weight that fits me best. While I was playing around w/ various configurations i was wondering, should I just get the barebones everything then buy my own ram/HDD upgrades? Seems like it would be cheaper and most likely of higher quality than whatever dell would give me.

also does dell ever offer coupons for latitude notebooks? i see a lot for inspirons on GottaDeal but never for latitudes.

Yes it is cheaper, but it probably voids your warranty if they find out.

Check out ebay - you should be able to get lots of deals there.

Better to post in the appropriate forum.

It's often cheaper to buy memory and storage upgrades separately.

Take a lookout at Dell Outlet, you can find some great deals on refurb or open box latitudes and you won't be able to tell that they're not new (except for a small red sticker on the bottom). Unless you want to deal with selling the hard drive that you pull out of the laptop, I'd buy the hard drive upgrade from dell, but buy ram from newegg, and other accessories through eBay.

That has links for all kinds of latitudes under the Small Business category. As for the upgrades, that's what I did. I just left the ram and HDD as the smallest allowed then bought what I really wanted from Newegg. However, depending on the deal, it may not actually save you anything. Just one of those things you'll have to check at checkout.

for some reason dell only offers 4200rpm HDDs for the D420 i might want to upgrade that to a faster speed

it shouldn't void your warranty to replace your memory and harddrive. I have upgraded many Dell laptops in the past, with nary a problem.

You won't be able to find a faster drive, the D420 uses an ultra-portable 1.8" HDD, not a regular laptop 2.5"

Edit: Damn, M4H beat me to it.
