...and i'm really struggling in Circuit Analysis and totally bombed my second Introduction to Digital Design midterm (i'm a 2nd year student). should i think of finding another major? i am so depressed right now, do engineers with bad grades (around 2.0) make it?...ahhhh...

people with confidence and enthusiasm in the work they do are the ones that make it. You *can* make it with a 2.XX gpa at a very good university, but maybe not so at a not so highly ranked one.

But the key is confidence, enthusiasm, and how you market yourself. Right now, you probably don't have much of the first two, thus marketing yourself is hard to do.

are these the first courses in the series? it all depends on if your scores are due to some other factor or if you really don't get it. if it's because you slacked off and didn't study as much as you could, then you might just want to retake it and move on. a lot of your future courses will be based on this, and you might understand it with some time.

as for the question of whether engineers with 2.0's make it: at my school 2.0 was the lowest anyone could go without going on academic probation. you probably threw out the number but meant engineers with low gpas. typically 3.0 is required for entry level positions unless you have good work experience. but how do you get a job if you don't have any because your gpa is low? i don't know. in the current economy i'd say it's hard, but when the economy picks up, it'll be easier. if your gpa isn't too far below 2.0, i wouldn't worry too much and try to finish it. when you take your electives, certain areas of EE don't deal so much with circuits, such as solid state electronics. basic principles are needed, but they're basic. perhaps you would consider seeing a career counselor on campus.

if you don't do EE, what would you major in?

see that's the problem, EE is the only thing worth stressing over, it's the only thing that is interesting to me...

yea, but circuit analysis gets tedious. i guess the circuit analysis situation is my fault because the professor can't teach, book isn't too much of a help, and i just don't study for the class.

but i guess the reason i'm most down right now is because for my digital design class, i find that class amazingly interesting and fun. i studied a lot for the past midterm and i totally didn't do well on it. in addition to this, i want to be an EE with an emphasis in computers, but after this class, that will probably change. i'm wondering if this is all worth it, engineers that are actually working right now must have 100 times the stress that i'm having now, at that rate, i'll probably die trying to figure out the logic of some circuit or something...=/

PM me if you want, I went through the same situation. I've gotta go right now though.

ahh im in the same situation...

at first when i applied to college i was deciding between comp egninering and CS, and wasnt sure so i was gonna just apply undeclared and then when i got in i'd decide then, but both those majors are impacted and its impossible to change into those majors, they're only accepting newly accepted students..so i decided on EE since that's the closest to those..and im taking the intro to EE class right now and i have no clue what im doing and just bombed my quizes..so im thinking now about switching majors...but i really have no idea what i want to do...im thinking mechanical engineering...i really wanna do something that has to do w/ computers, but both comp eng and cs are impossibel to get into at my school :(

and i register tomorrow, and have no idea what classes i should take because im not sure what i want to major in now

I had the same problem. I had trouble initially, but it got better. Actually, for me, I found the junior/senior classes easier and more interesting than the earlier classes.

Starting my college career, I was absolutely sure I wanted to be an aeronautical engineer; I'd been nuts about airplanes and spacecraft since I was five years old. Then in sophomore year I encountered my first fuild dynamics glass -- I absolultely hated it! Wandered in mechanical engineering and back out again (thanks in good part to an aversion for thermodynamics). But I found a "oneness" with Maxwell's Equations, which everyone else seemed to find very difficult. I got my BS in electrical engineering, but then was exposed (through an unbelieveably strange sequence of events) to electrical power engineering -- we're not talking milliwatts, it's MEGAWATTS now! So I ended up getting a masters in that.

My story is really pretty typical. Most engineers I know started out with one discipline in mind, but switched one or more times before they graduated. AnzMaverick, It sounds like you really still enjoy EE. If so, stick with it. But if you really start to get discouraged, you might give a different discipline a try.

Good luck!

Same here but it was my own fault for dicking around and not getting my act together, but after growing up some I got above a 3.0 my junior and senior years.

Learning the stuff before well before you get to the electives makes things alot easier.

Minus well take the time, learn math well, perhaps work on a math minor too. Math is crucial to understand EE well.

I had a "C" average my first year, and then as the years went by it gradually rose to a "B" average, and now I'm designing microprocessors for Intel. The first two years were pretty rough. Circuit theory was boring, electromagnetism was boring. I liked Digital Design though. My primary problem was that I'd never really learned to study in high school and then I didn't take very good notes during really boring classes. So I would have lousy notes to study with going into the tests, and I was not that great at the discipline of actually studying through them. I gradually learned the trick of taking good notes, and studying more effectively for exams, but it took a while. My third and fourht years were much, much better. My first couple of years held down my overall grades, but then I did a Master's degree and graduated with a couple of published papers, a solid internship and much better academic scores.

One bit of advice is if your grades are not that great in your undergrad, make sure you do a post-graduate degree somewhere. People are less inclined to look askance at poor grades in a BSEE degree if you have pretty good grades in an MSEE over the top of it.

If you find it interesting, stick with it. I never honestly considered switching majors, but I did wonder some times in the first couple of years if I was cut out to be an engineer. It all worked out.

I'm going to play the role of the d1ck. I went to a good school and pulled a 2.7/4.0. Getting a job was a pain in the a$$.

Here are your options/things you can do:
1) Change your major to something you can get a 3.0+ in.
2) do atleast 2 co-ops.
3) bust your a$$ and get your average up to a 3.0.
4) Get your in major GPA up to over a 3.0

One thing I am adimant about. CO-OPS!

A 2.7 with atleast one CO-OP will make getting a job easier.

FYI: I am making it now, but the journey sucked.

EE is a very tough road to go. But if you stick with it you will have the chance to go far. EE's are NASA's most sought after potential employees. Even more so than AE's.
