If I were to order a SAMSUNG drive from Newegg right now, will I get a SEAGATE??

Just curious.. has anyone purchased a SAMSUNG HDD in the last few weeks from newegg? I want to buy the Samsung F4 2tb drive, on sale for $109.. but I'm curious if they still even have any of the original Samsung manufactured drives, and if they are just re-badging their Seagates as Samsungs..

I have also already heard that Seagate only honors a 1 year warranty, unlike the 3 years it is supposed to come with and is advertised as coming with.

I bought a 2TB F4 earlier this week, it looks like they are re-badging samsungs as seagates. My drive looks the exact same as the older F4s, same model #, same firmware. However it is manufactured in 3/2012 and does have a Seagate Barracuda Green logo on it along with Samsung.

My assumption is it is still the same internals as the older F4s since it looks and has the specs of the older ones, and is distinctly different than the Seagate drives. But no guarantees they didn't change the manufacturing to some seagate parts. I don't know about the warranty, it didn't have a warranty card in the box hopefully its still 3 years but dunno for sure.

If you look on Samsung's site for storage, you will not see a single rotational drive. That would lead me to think you instead will see Seagate's name on the one you order.

Cool, thanks for the info so far..

Was it manufactured in China? Or Korea, dmarkham?

I guess I really don't care if Seagate's label is on top of it.. what I care about is the inside.. can anyone confirm if the Samsung PARTS are still in the newly Seagate labeled F4's? What would worry me is if Seagate changed some parts to theirs instead of whatever Samsung has traditionally been using.

The Samsung F4 has a great track record.. The Seagate equivalents, not so much..

Don't have access to the drive at the moment, but pretty sure it said Made in China on it.

Did it come in a clear plastic clamshell, like Samsung used to use? Or did it come in a metallic gray ESD-safe bag, like Seagate HDDs?

It came in a plastic clamshell with nothing else but a little bag with 4 bronze colored screws.

FYI got mine from newegg also.

The two I ordered last week came in plastic clam shells.
My heart took a leap when I saw the "Seagate Barracuda" on the drive; but when I compared it to a previous drive the electronics layout etc was the same as before.

So these look to come from the same factory but with an "improved" Seagate label and possibly warranty.

Oh and no problems putting around 1.5TB of data onto one of the drives without a glitch (this is the bit I like about the Samsungs)

Hmm, there seem to be conflicting reports going around.. doesn't seem like anyone can confirm anything yet.. but they ARE being sold with labels stating they were manufactured in 03/2012 from China.. not from the old Samsung factory in South Korea.

The other thing really troubling me, is the lack of solid warranty documentation on Seagate's website.. leading me to think the newegg advertised 3 year warranty, will not be honored.. since I don't think newegg is responsible for that, Seagate is.

Somethings tells me that Seagate is NOT going to continue on with the somewhat short-lived legacy of these Samsung Spinpoints.. :(

I haven't had a Seagate drive in an ESD bag in like 10 years. All my Seagate drives have come in the clamshell. Several years ago, I remember Seagate making some kind of deal about those, maybe they were the first to use them... they called it a "Sea-shell"

I don't think there's been time, especially not in the current hard drive market where Seagate has been making up for WD's loss in volume from the flood damage and are shipping everything they can make. Why would they shut down the Samsung stuff rather than use the extra capacity? Doesn't make sense. These have to be the same drives as before.

I love my Samsung drives, bought them over the Seagates for a reason. Sad to see this happen.

According the Seagate's CEO they completed integration way back in late December with first shipments the last week of that month.

I believe the drives should still be made or at least assembled in the Korea factory.
