Well I have the idea of doing like a newegg type thing for quite some time.

But I need ideas from you smart anandtech folks on what would make this store better than all the rest.

There actually isn't thing you could do to make me want to shop with you. I already have a short list of vendors that have proven themselves in the past and I have no reason to change.

I think at this point in the game it'd be more wise for you to start up something other than computer hardware... because people already have their loyalty to newegg and other various retailers...

Invest your money and time in something less cut-throat as the computer hardware industry...

Pictures/specs/links. Newegg has it right in this regard. People want to know exactly what they're buying. And if they can see it and get detailed info of it, that's a HUGE plus. One thing I would add to Newegg's product listings would be a small line informing of each product's warranty. We know that Newegg's direct warranty is generally 7 days. But it would be nice to see how long of a warranty each product carries with the manufacturer. All we'd need is "Warranty: 1-yr manf". That's it.

I worked for one of the big online retailers. And that was one of the biggest complaints we got. The site looked great. But the only picture of the product we'd have up wasn't always accurate.

Exactly -- newegg is already selling at close to the smallest markup that will let them offer good service and stay in business. The only way you could undercut them is by either losing money or running it out of your garage at a lower quality of service.

The only real chance you have is to offer niche services of exotic components (ricing, quiet PCs) and assembly, which is a tiny market.

Yeah, you'll need those three, and that's pretty hard to do, I assume. But about the five years thing, that's not always true. As long as you have good service every time, then people will recommend you to others, and it'll spread.

However, a lot of people will just stick to the store they already know even if you have prices a bit cheaper and service a bit faster.
