If I were to ask for someone to support a zSeries IBM server, what degree's or certifications should I ask for?

Have they ever been a server administrator? Do you have an IBM service contract?

An MCSE might be a good start, but it won't really end up mattering too much. I would look at the persons experience and whether they are knowledgeable with the server in question, its function and the applications required.

dont think any microsoft degree will do anyone good, its mostly about taking backups, preparing programs from the software department to be run on the server and printing out "i dont know what" that is stored on the server

Well, its running an MS OS? What backup program? Arcserve? Veritas Netbackup? NTBackup? Printing out information? The answers to those questions would be good in finding who to support it.

That all sounds like very basic server administration. You really just need someone who is responsible and has worked with servers before.

Oh thats a bit different :). I don't know what kind of certifications there are for mainframe support. But I'd just make sure you are more specific in what your server is doing when looking for a person to hire.

FYI we have zSeries IBM Servers running W2K. Thats why you threw me off..
