If I was to get this CPU OEM... Would this fan/heatsink be good?

That heatsink would be ok, but i've heard its noisy, and there are better ones for the money. The zalman 7000alcu would probably cool just as well if not better, and its almost silent. You can find it for $30 in many places.

Would it be better to have the stock fan or get the upgraded ones? I want to overclock... Also could you provide a link to the best hsf...

It is better then the stock HSF. I have that HSF, and the retail HSF. The silent boost is better.

The fan is thermally controlled. So in a hot case it will be loud due to the fan spinning up. I shorted the thermal diode though. The fan does 6k RPM @ 12v. That's loud! I use the BIOS to clock the fan down to 4k RPM. I don't like any diode telling me how fast to run my fans... :p

The Thermalright XP-120 is the best A64 HSF.

The XP 120 won't fit my board, so I'll be getting the Thermalright XP-90 soon.

Sorry, I don't have a link off hand... Google it. I would get an XP-120. If you can't fit an XP-120 to that board, get an XP-90.

Hello. I also own the A8N-SLI, and I have a AMD 3200+ winchester (I actually bought the retail one because I got it for $203 from ZipZoomFly (however the current price there is $214. ), and the lowest price for the OEM version at the time was only $193 from Monarch. But after that $193, consider that I would have wanted to buy the 3 year warranty for an additional $15, and that would have put me at $208, which was already higher than the $203 for the retail, which includes the 3 year AMD warranty, and also the stock HSF (which now maybe will see use as a paperweight ;) )

As far as CPU buying for you RIGHT NOW, pricewatch shows me the following link for the lowest price on the 3200+ OEM ($178.94):
http://www.smksuperstore.com/c.../viewitem.asp?ID=13295

I have never seen that site before, so I'm very skeptical if it's actually the Winchester, or if it's really the Newcastle. I'd certainly call before ordering (though like I said, pricewatch gives me that link when I specifically click on the 3200+ 939 pin 90nm (Winchester). If they can't tell you for sure that it's the Winnie, then I'd say go with Monarch for $193 (then add warranty if you want).

OK, onto your heatsink. I bought the Thermalright XP-120, which by all accounts is the ultimate heatsink that is currently in existence for P4's or A64's. I paid $43 (and about $4 shipping) at the following link, which to my knowledge is still the lowest price anywhere for this item, if you want the COLDEST CPU possible:
http://bestbyteinc.com/prodinf...tion=&aitem=7&mitem=24

Does the XP-120 fit on the A8N-SLI? If you look at the official compatibility list from Thermalright, it says it's no problem. I have also seen at least 1 person post pictures of their setup with these components in the motherboard section of this forum. As for me, I've yet to get any of it put together (haven't had time... hopefully this weekend... btw thanks to Amaroque for his tips on installation in a thread I posted about this last night).

Along with that heatsink, I ordered the Panaflo 120mm 103.8 CFM fan. It seems to push A LOT of air, and comes pretty highly recommended by several reviews I've seen (not to mention official Thermalright recommendation). You may also consider a fan by Nexus; many people love them and say they're super-quiet.

Please refer to this thread from the Hot Deals section for more comments on the XP-120, and also on page 2 and 3 user Inappropriate4AT posted links to many different fan options that you might consider.

Hope this helps in your buying!

You can't go wrong with the Thermalright XP-120/90. Both have proven to be the elite coolers of the HSF world. If you want some really cool options, look into water cooling/vapochilling.

So if I was to invest in the XP 120 would you need to purchase a suitable 120mm fan to be mounted on it, or does it work completely fanless?

Opps, found the answer, silly me!

Would it be easier/just about the same to get the 7000alcu? I'm kinda leaning in that direction...

My retail HSF is keeping my Winchester @ 32-34c Idle with a 240x10 overclock with the ram at 200 MHz. I don't think I brake 36c-38c load. The problem is that the temps might just be sensed differently from the larger 130nm cores. So there might be some heat leakage that isn't getting picked up by the motherboard on the small core.

really just depends on the board. my old ABIT P4 board always reported temps 10C high than they really where using a thermal probe. a few degrees fluctuation between brands is normal

Just my 2 cents worth. Buy a mid range cooler, or go with the Retail CPU. I beleive the copper is the best at transferring heat, but i am sure i can start an argument with that statement. I have overclocked for years and have found that the hs/fan on air made very little difference on overclock speed, and maybe a better cooler may lower the temps a few degrees. I do run a non stock hs/fan mainly for the low noise level.

Performance difference between the two is trivial IMO & I'd get the AlCu version based solely on factors of weight, let alone price. FWIW, copper absorbs heat faster than aluminum but aluminum looses heat faster than copper.

I just picked up the themal right xp-120 heatsink and the panaflow 120x38mm fans.
How do you attach the fans to the cpu? Those fans are huge.
