I love the guy, but it is to his advantage. He can speak VERY well in short stints, but get him to speak for more than a minute or two... he stumbles.

You have to admit, it's better than: say four words, BOO, four words, BOO, etc. at least it's POSITIVE feedback, which is more than he's gotten for awhile.

That would irritate me as well. Every few seconds people bust out with clapping. I'd be up there after the first four or say and just break out "SHUT UP AND LET ME FINISH DAMNIT". Then they'd probably want my head on a platter. :)

A public speaker will derive confidence from such a gesture. I doubt he is complaining.

Don't be so sure..."Clappers" annoy me when they don't get it and clap at inconvenient times. They also throw your rhythm. I got the nagging impression that the PR spin-paramedic who wrote the speech actually wrote in where he thought the applause would go and stood up clapping at all those times to get everyone else going...
