What the hell. If I type google.com without the www into IE it takes me to bing. If I put the www in it takes me to google just fine.

It seems like google.com doesn't work though for some reason without the www today.

Microsoft browser... Microsoft search engine... Yes it's truly a mystery.

(not sure if serious)

1) type google into address bar
2) hit ctrl+enter

4) profit

problem solved with less typing

Here's my take.

The address bar defaults to a quick search for bing. If you don't have the www in front of google, IE thinks you are making a search and uses the default engine (bing).

Just a guess.

Yeah. For some reason google just isn't working today at my office. Not sure why. We're pretty much stuck with IE at work.

It's treating "google.com" as a search term and the default browser is probably Bing.

EDIT - doh, just saw Terzo's post.

Google.com takes me directly to Google.com in IE8 on Windows 7. Change your default search provider?

It will only do that if it fails a DNS lookup for "google.com".

In other words, fix your DNS and the problem will go away.
