If I remove the casing of a PSU so I can mount it towards the front of the case, atop a perch of plexi, then what else do I need to do... in terms of finding a new place to screw that green ground wire to and the like.

Basically, what needs to be done so nothing explodes or catches fire?

the psu needs to be inclosed for cooling, but you can try to make a new case for it out of plexyglass. make sure you keep the fan on it.

Lots of the modding vendors have clear plexi covers for PSUs. The PSU circuit board is connected to AC power ground by the metal case.
. So if you remove all of the metal case, you will have to rig up some ground strapping. You want to ground strap your drives and perhaps even your mobo.
Not as simple as you thought, eh?
