If I purchase an OEM computer, can I use that key to install a clean version of Windows?

I have a computer from Dell wtih Vista on it. Can I reformat it with a standard "clean" version of Vista using the key I got from Dell? Or can I only use the Dell Recovery disk?

I don't know about Dell, but I can do a clean install with H-P and Lenovo. As long as the key matches the OEM hardware, it should be no problem.

The only thing you need is the same version and type of Vista
Such as Ultimate or Home and in this case OEM type
It should work fine with no issues, but you may need to call to
activate since Dell OS checks the mobo or the BIOS to be sure
it is a Dell and if it is, the OS is preactivated thru the Volume License
that Dell has with MS

So I can acquire a Vista Home Premium disc and install it. Do I need the OEM version?

Would it be legal to download the iso for it since I have a legal key?

my cousin's old HP A64 4000+ crapped out on him 3 mos ago. I offered to fix it for him with spare parts I had lying around the house. I basically rebuilt the computer. The only parts I kept were his hard drive and the 4000+ cpu. EVERYTHING else was different. I was able to activate windows (XP mce) without even having to format the hard drive; in fact, all of their old settings still worked perfectly. He specifically asked me to try to keep all of his old settings. I had to request a different license after giving them the license off the old computer, but that was it. It still works perfectly.

Yes you do need the OEM version as that is what Dell uses.
As to downloading it, while it would be ok, legally, as far as
the license, I would be wary of possible problems (virus / trojan)
that might be in the download. It would have to be direct form MS
to be safe. Better to borrow a copy of the correct version / type
and make a copy of it. Or see if Dell can provide just the OS on
a cd / dvd (even if it costs a few $$)

A DVD has all versions Home/Business/Ultimate etc (of either 32 or 64 bit).

You should be able to use either OEM or Retail media (not sure about Upgrade). You may need to call in to activate.

I think Dell will ship you real media for a few bucks (not the crapware-ridden restore crap).
