If I only play in resonably low res, will the MX400 be good enough on a tight budget??

If I only play in resonably low res, will the MX400 be good enough on a tight budget??

I am ungrading to a 1.2 ghz, Epox Kta3 and Geforce MX400 (64meg).

I had an AMD K6/2 550 with a 4 meg onboard.

Will it be a good upgrade??

Will the MX be fine if the max res is 1024x768????

Thanks

yeah the mx will be just fine for low res gaming at 16 bit, but you can buy a radeon le for the same price/cheaper instead, and it's much better then the mx.

Probably not the memory on those cards causes a bottleneck at about 800X600. My friend has one and if he goes over 800X600 his frame rate plummets. Thats in Quake3 though. You probably would want to spend a little more and get one of the original geforce2 gts. Thats what I have and I can play with everything turned to max at 1280x1024 but 1024x768 works best. I've seen the gf2 gts for around 130 online. I payed 300 for mine:(. Well hope this helps

It'll be ok for 1024x768 16bit but both the Radeon LE and Kyro 1 are cheaper and faster at high res and 32bit and the Kyro 1 is good for FSAA too. The Hercules 3D Prophet 4000XT Kyro 1 board is only $55 with free delivery at newegg.com.

Okay, are you sure about the Kyro 1 being faster. I live in Australia, so the prices are damn high.
The Kyro 1 is $188
Geforce 2 MX400 - $195
GTS - $299

Which one??

best bet is for the radeon le, trust me
kyroI will only outperform the mx in 32bit, and only by a small margin

Okay...i cant find the radeon anywhere here in Australia.

So, i can fork out another $95 and go for the GTS 32meg with tvout or get the MX400???

Is it worth the extra??

BTW it is a powercolor GTS!

How much is the Radeon LE over there?, also how much is the Kyro II? The Kyro 1 certainly does fair better then the MX at high resolution in 32bit colour and it will be even better with FSAA. But if you can get the Radeon LE for the same price as the MX then get that and flash it to a full Radeon.

The only place that I have found that distributes ATI is http://www.servex.com.au/products/ati/radeon32.htm. A radeon 32 MB is $319. It may be worthwile calling servex and asking them if they distribute the LE - because I too have not seen it.

A 64 Mb Kyro 2 (Hercules Prophet 4500) costs ~$390 AUD - about the same price as a GTS.

I am thinking of getting the Prolink PixelView MX 400 (about $180). It has 4.5 ns ram.....it did quite well in the tomshardware GF2 roundup...

Absolutely. The GeForce2 MX florishes at resolutions of 800x600 and below, whereas the GeForce2 GTS/Pro/Ultra, the Voodoo5-5500, and the RADEON run great at 1024x768 and up.

As jobberd vouched, go with the Radeon LE if possible, then flash & tweak it to a full-fledged Radeon DDR to enjoy some of the worldly goodness of 32-bit at higher resolution in today's newer games :) . If not, then you should still be happy with an MX400 (much akin to the older GF2MX) at lower resolutions, considering the beefy CPU.

Would it be worth getting the gts if i intend to do a bit of gaming @ 1024x768 with perhaps 32bit??

Thanks

I have a GeForce2 MX, an Epox 8K7A (1.2 gig t-bird)and 256 MB of ram. All games run fine at 1024X768X32. Unreal runs at 85FPS avg on most maps. This is a good value card. 8)

We need to hammer in the fact that those extra 32mb on the MX boards are USELESS. I keep seeing people in Best Buy chosing the 64mb MX boards over the 32mb GTS boards because they have 32mb more ram. Heh.

Save your money and buy a 32mb MX board, or even better, a Radeon LE if you can find one. They should be about the same price, at least they are in the US.

Okay...i cannot get a radeon LE unless i order one from the states. Typical!

So...do i get the GTS for 289 or the MX 400 for 195??

is the GTS worth the extra $94 - it is a powercolor 32meg GTS pro.

Did you ask Servex Australia if they distribute the Radeon LE?

Getting a GTS really depends if you can live with ~30 fps of the MX @ 1024x768 or would prefer more fps.

It's typical, we are always the last to get the new stuff!! :(

Just look at the Acoustic Edge sound card from Philips. Philips Austalia wern't even aware that they existed untill I told them ;)

Cheers.

I don't know if you missed what I said, but it's your money. Why you'ld want to waste it on a 64mb MX board is beyond me, but hey, what the hell.

There is no benefit whatsoever to having a 64mb MX board over a 32mb version, and the 32mb MX boards are much cheaper.

if i were you, i would get the kyro 1 for $188.00. it's faster than the mx, has great win2k drivers, and is cheaper to boot. you can't go wrong with that.

radeon win2k drivers arent that great, i suggest you order a gts from newegg or wherever is cheaper for you. and yes you will see a big difference with this upgrade.
