If i hook up 2 computers to share files using a crossover cable, what is the fastest cable i can use?

Cable's not fast. Sorta just lies there actually. 🙂

You can use any type of cable you want. There's no such thing as "too fast" a cable type, except insofar as coax networking is slower than UTP, and you can't use UTP on a coax connection.

Cat5 is the minimum for 100Mbps FastEthernet. Cat5e is slightly better signal quality and technically supports gigabit over copper, but Cat6 would be better for that. Cat3 is only 10Mbps Ethernet.

Cat 5 available at most computer stores and/or electical supply stores.

Just make sure it is cross-over as some sales folk don't know the difference from regular.

Do a visual check of the pin-outs on the ends.

Right, and to add to this, what makes a crossover cable is that the wires on each end are not in the same order. Same order means regular cable, different order means crossover (as long as it's the right different order, which you shouldn't have to worry about at a store.
