I have google voice calls forwarded to my cell and voice mail going to google voice. Is there a particular concern?

Going to your cell will use SMS.

If you have data, there's no need for any SMS or text package - just have google voice send texts to an email. You can reply via email and it will send the reply back as text, or you can go to the voice site and reply there. If you have an android phone you can reply via the voice app.

If you're talking about SMS, there is no need to forward to your cell. Actually, I called AT&T and asked them to remove the SMS feature from my phone. After about a 10 minute talk with the CS, she finally went through and disabled. Now I am saving over $20/month (two lines).

If you're talking about phone calls... yes, you should forward to your cell phone.

I don't think you can forward SMS. I know you can forward to email but not to SMS on a phone.

On an iPhone you can use Prowl/Growl to forward SMS's as "instant notifications" for free. I turned off SMS'ing on my account and just told everyone to use my Google Voice number.

I was talking about voice calls. I want GV to pick up all my calls so I can record them/use their voicemail instead of Tmobile's. I wish I could save money by dropping texting but its just part of my plan.

I have this on my iPhone as well. All calls to my GV number forward to my phone and I get the voicemails transcribed as "instant notifications". It works fine, although the transcription effectiveness varies in quality depending on the accent of the caller. I've had some interesting (ie. "completely incoherent") transcriptions. But calls forward though fine, voicemail works fine. I'm happy.

You can use conditional forwarding on your phone to have GV answer all your calls for you instead of TMo's voicemail service. The only minor issue with doing this is that Tmo might start charging you after X minutes of conditional forwarding (my plan has 1000 minutes included which is more than I would ever come close to using, but for an extremely heavy user I suppose it could be a problem).

The instructions for doing this are on the GV site.

One of the sweet things about the old faves program (I'm grandfathered) is to add your GV as a fave and have unlimited calls...
