If I have paper plane tickets...

I know I'm still required to check in, but can I do so electronically? The ticket was bought using my father's credit card... can I still use my own as identification to do the e-check in?

With this new "orange terror alert", what time should I arrive at the airport? My plane leaves at 4pm.

If your plane leaves at 4pm.. arrive before noon. you'll have to go thru the regular checkin lines as well as a nice long line at the boarding gates.

I think 4 hours is excessive. Depending on the airline you can check in electronically or at kiosks without waiting in the regular ticket desk line. Two hours is what the airlines are recommending.

Yeah, I'd say two hours is enough.
You might end up getting there too early and then have to spend a lot of time hanging around. But, of course, there is something to be said for being safe than sorry.

My mom just flew into NY to see me and she had arrived at the airport quite early and did end up having a lot of maketime on her hands.

Your ID should be fine even though someone else bought the ticket. As long as your name is on the ticket there should be no worries. I would be there around 1- 1:30 considering it is the holidays.

Have a safe trip. Enjoy your time with the family :)

Considering it's the holidays and the national terror threat level has been upped to Orange I would arrive at least 1.5-2 hours early.

Fitting all my presents for my family into a carryon is going to be... interesting. But I'll do it if it saves me time. So if I don't check in anything and just have two carry-ons... I can just go straight to the gate and check in there? Don't I need a boarding pass before they'll even let me into the terminal, past security?

Good advice in terms of time, I think I'll leave for LAX by 1:30 (or 1:45pm at the latest... it should take 30-45 minutes to drive there).

you have to go through the regular ticket counter with a paper ticket

what airport? if its a big one in CA , then get there about 1 pm (for a domestic flight, i assume, if its international, then get there about 11 am)

yes you need the BP to get thru security

Interestingly enough, apparently I don't... For LAX, if I don't check in any bags, it looks like I can go straight to the gate to check in.

All I have to do now is figure out how to fit all my presents for the family into 2 carryon bags. Hopefully they won't make me unwrap them. :(

Yes you get one carry-on bag and a purse type thing. Get to the airport between 1:30 and 2:00. You'll almost certainly need a boarding pass to get through security. I don't see how they'd let you through without one. Since you have a paper ticket you'll probably have to go to a counter to check-in rather than a kiosk.

Only possibility is that your paper ticket is a boarding pass. Then you could go straight to the gate. Why not call the airline and ask?
