If I had $8K for a small, rwd car, what would you suggest?

beer

This is merely a hypothetical here.

If I were to sell my car today, I could probably get about $8K for it. Probably a bit less. If I wanted a small, rwd car, what would you suggest? It wouldn't be really used for commuting, so a stick is a good option. I would want it to last about 4 more years at about 10K miles/year.

First and foremost, I need reliability. I do not plan on modding the car.
Second would be performance and fuel efficiency, and third would be image.

Which is exactly what I was thinking.

HOWEVER I doubt I would be able to find a 240SX that wasn't ragged on considerably. They're in relative high demand for a used car and I doubt I could find one at all, much less in my price range.

Right
Because reliability and thus implicitity TCO is the first thing I have a priority on, and you suggest a porsche.

1991 Nissan 240SX + S13 Red-Top SR20DET + Boost Controller, Exhaust, Front Mount Intercooler, Fuel Pump

Possible, but tight, for $8,000.

Oh, never mind, no mods. The 240 is not the car for you.

v8 mustangs aren't bad either. pretty decent about gas. no, its not a civic, but its not a truck either

get one loaded, with low milage in good shape, there out there, price is under 8 grand
I have owned three of these a 92 a 93 and a 95, I still own the 95
the 93 I bought new drove it to 180K and sold for 3 grand, it was the best car I ever owned

the best year is the 93, the worst year is the 94
look here

carpoint lists the 97s blue booking at under 8 grand.

ford's modular v8 in the later ones so shouldn't be too hard to remedy that complaint 😀

what the heck is up with this crap i have to edit to make the message right?

Fair enough. I have a heavy bias towards performance cars I suppose. I do most of my own work, too, and people's perceived reliability never really frightens me. Our "high-cost, expensive to maintain" (utter bullshit) 1980s-90s BMWs have been rock solid. However, the most reliable car I've ever known is the Mercedes-Benz 190E. Many stories of these going 350000 miles and beyond.

I am not modding it because every modded car I have seen turns into a money pit. I don't car if its an Eagle Talon or an RX7 or a Honda Civic, I maintain that modding a car extensively severely reduces its reliability. I don't want to have to deal with someone else's installation mistakes a year from now.

Non-turbo MR2 would fit your criteria. They handle like they're on rails and they look dead sexy to boot 🙂

Yeah, but the turbo ones are oh so much more fun, and a 91 goes for about 7 G's or so around here with a little over 100k. It is a Toyota after all, it will last another 40k no sweat.
