I get these every so often. Sometimes it seems like you got it but if it isnt feeling almost 100% better by the next day you probably have some small piece of nail way down closer to where the nail starts.

I had the same problem five or six years ago with both feet, it seems I was cutting my big toe nails too short. Not to be gross but it was oozing out puss for days and hurt like a s.o.b. so I finally went in and they had to cut out half of each nail. I don't like to think about it but as I remember it didn't hurt it's just more the idea off, and it felt much better than having an ingrown toenail.

And when you do cut it, make it straight. I have to use the large size toenail clippers, then nail scissors to cut off the curve. I had the toenail surgically removed, and refused to have the matrix killed on the corner, so it started to dig in about half way when growing back out. I fixed that and haven't had problems since (as long as I don't cut them too short and keep the cut straight).

Oh and the relive the infection, prepare a bucket or port of hot water (hot enough you can bare), and mix in epsom salt and iodine. Soak for 30 minutes per night.

After that, don't cover it with neosporin or a bandage. Keep the foot dry - and keep your socks/shoes off whenever you can. If all the ingrown nail is removed, it should heal within a month by doing this.

i recently had the beginnings of an ingrown and avoided it by attacking it from the opposite side, like if its on the right side of my toe, i'd get in from the left side and pull along the edge (but not too deep) and lo and behold by the time i got to the right side, the sharp point tip that was causing discomfort came out with minimal effort. i got lucky and must have gotten the whole thing. i would hate to be a podiatrist and deal with those things, i'm sure theres lots of dudes who just live with those things and come in with some haggard feet.

Bleh, self-treatment all the way...

Couple of years ago, I had a in-grown on my left toe, it hurted like crap. So, I got some nail-clipper, Peroxide, small tipped scisors, small/mini flat-head, neosporin, and band-aid. Clipped my tow nails as far I could go without clipping my toe. Then used the flat-head to dig out the in-grown part, and used the nail clipper to clipped it off. Poked the inflammed part of my toe (that hurted like no tomorrow) and squeezed out all the puss. Then rinsed my toe with loads of peroxide and applied neosporin with band-aid. Kept reapplying neosporin -bandaid twice a day (morning and after shower at night). Somehow, that worked, and the toe healed. Now, everytime I feel a little pressure on my toe, I clip off the in-grown part before it goes any further.

thats been my experience, after paying a doctor something like $85 for 3 minutes of his time and 3 days in sandals because my toe was swollen to hell (nevermind the scrip he gave me for antibiotics) i now take 4 ibuprofen and a long hot shower....then i clip it immediately; the pain is mild after that for a day (just soreness from where the nail was poking the flesh) and its good.

I had the same problem when I was in High School. Went to the regular doctor (big mistake!!!). He took this instrument that looked like a mini wire cutter and jammed the thing right in to my big toe and then cut off what he could without any antithestic!!!! Heck my mom was in the room at the time and couldn't believe what had happened. The worst part was that the nail grew back even worse. Finall got to a podiatrist and they explained that they have to kill the section of the nail causing the problem. Of course they used antithestic.

Lesson learned: Go to a Podiatrist!!!

stop cutting it out. i know this sounds crazy, but trust me. let the whole nail grow out a bit until the side is finally poking free from the front. then cut a "V" into the middle of the front of the nail. you can trim the far side down a bit if you want, but leave the ingrown half fairly long. it will feel a lot better.

or you can go to a pediatrist and have them kill the root. that works wonders (had this done on one toe).

Go to a podiatrist. I have ingrown infected toenails, both big toes. You're about 15-you can get rid of this quickly. Make sure it doesn't get infected, but find a good podriast- mine is like a friend that I discuss cars with and such-one of the coolest guys I'll ever meet. :)

Oh yeah, so just go to a podriast which is my final point;)
