if i go to a different country for couple months

i have about 500 bucks in credit card debt, but if i fly out of this country for couple months, do i still have to keep paying it off every month? or will the credit card defer the payments and let me reinitiate the payments when i get back?
 
Of course you have to keep paying; that's why they're called "monthly payments" and not "just pay us when you're in town payments".
 
Read your credit card's agreement and disclosure.

YES you are expected to continue making payments on time or your credit will go further down the drain.

Just ask them to setup automatic payments to debit your checking account once a month for the minimum payment due.
 
Of course you don't have to pay it. It's called the Vacation Deferment Plan. Anytime you go to another country that is on the approved list (Really all are, except Iraq, some S. African countries, and North Korea) you don't have to pay anymore.

Yep...he is right, everyone else is simply pulling your leg so don't listen to them. I did this very thing when I went to Europe for 6 months so don't worry and enjoy our vacation.

Yep...he is right, everyone else is simply pulling your leg so don't listen to them. I did this very thing when I went to Europe for 6 months so don't worry and enjoy our vacation.

Yeah i used the VDP also, it worked out great for me cause i didn't have money to pay them while I was out of the country and so i just deffered it till i came back. it worked out well!
 
I would think you'd still be responsible for it. Just because you are in another country, doesn't mean you don't owe them money.

That's one of the nice things about Canada - our VDP (called the RCVDP, RC standing for Royal Canadian) is a lot less restrictive than the one you guys have down in the States. You can't go to Cuba and defer payments but I can.

VDP is great, especially if you have Amex Blue. You don't have to pay them until you get back, AND you can use the same credit card while you're in that country. Don't confuse that with SDP, or School Deferment Plan, where you don't have to pay when you're in school. You have to sign up for that plan.

My MBNA's VDP only lasts for 6 months though, but thae last time i used it, it was only for 2 months.

You will be fine. The federally mandated VDP will prevent this from being a problem. The minimum VDP period by law is six months, check with your bank to see if they have a longer one.
