If I get AOL broadband, do I have to use the AOL software?

My friend has AOL, and to connect he has to open AOL and type in his username and password. He can use Firefox etc, but only while running the AOL browser (if he crosses the AOL browser off he is disconnected). Is there any way to connect WITHOUT ever using the software? If so, how?

you always have to use thier crap to get access...
depending on where you live.. check into BellSouth DSL, or Verizon, or even SBC. also a great resource for checking out broadband solutions is DSL Reports
 
With AOL, reguardless of if it is broadband or not, you will have to have the clunk slow browser open to have an internet connection at all(This means it must be open to use firefox, IE, or any game).

Do not get AOL.
