Yep. You can install any OS you wish on the laptop. You could install Windows 3.1 if you wanted too. 😉
 
There's nothing stopping you from doing that, except for the legality of the fact that you probably don't have a XP Pro or Win2k license.

He didn't mention piracy in his post; why assume that he's getting the OS in an illegal way?

Anyways, yes you can install any OS you want to. I nuked XP Home and put Knoppix on my laptop as soon as I got it.
 
Sure can. Just make sure to get all the needed drivers for your hardware. The only thing you'll probably have to install driver wise is modem, video card & chipset. Depends on the age of the laptop, the older it is, the less drivers you'll have to install.
 
I won't be buying it, my dad will, so XP's and 2k's retail price are of little concern. But I'll have you know I own a legal copy of Win2k Pro. :|

It is going to be his business laptop so I thought he would need XP Pro or 2k. If he doesn't, I'll just leave Home on there.
 
Probably the biggest thing to consider then is if he will be connecting to a domain at work. Other than that he'll get along just fine. If he needs support for domains then install the win2k on there...

That came out wrong. What I meant was that some of MS' licenses are backwards compatible, meaning if you buy Win2K Pro you can install NT 4 Workstation legally but I don't think XP Home has any thing like that. If he gets XP Pro he can probably legally install Win2K Pro (I would still double-check since MS' licensing is so convoluted) without purchasing an extra license.

Yes, it is legal to go from XP pro to 2k pro.

I would install a small Linux distro on it if it is going to be a note taker, wordprocessor, and programing device.

My friend has a new gateway lappy for work, and XP pro is not too keen on The DOS based phone systems he works on. I suggested we make it into a dual boot unit with win98, which is compatible with the dos. My question is, can we get the OEM OS to install on a partition we created after installing the win 98, or will it automatically blow away the partition and install over the entire drive?
