This guy calls up, wants to know whether his DSL connection is in PPP mode or bridging mode. I look up his account, he's got a third party ISP. The connection mode is strictly a function of the ISP, not the line. So I tell him he needs to call his ISP. He basically tells me to pull my head out of my ass, because when he called them they asked him for a credit card number.
Me: (while searching the homepage of his ISP for a contact phone number) Sir, the information you're asking me for is strictly a function of the ISP. I do not have that information. If I did, I'd give it to you.
Customer: Well I signed up for this DSL service for $19.95 a month, & I'm not getting it.
Me: (still searching) Sir, we only provide the line. Your ISP is totally separate from us. (finding a number) Sir, what was that number you had?
Customer: XXXXXXXXXX
Me: Well, that's the only contact number I'm seeing on their web page. I'd say you have the right number.
Customer: Well, I'll call them back. If I get asked for a credit card number again, I'm calling the FCC.
Me: You're more than welcome to do that.
Customer: And after I call the FCC I'm going to call the PUC.
Me: Go for it.
Customer: (click)
My GOD, where do these morons come from? And why can't we banish them back to their holes?
First place, the guy was bitching to the wrong person. Nobody in Qwest would have that information, ESPECIALLY not LAN support. Second place, DSL is NOT regulated. The FCC & PUC would laugh him off the phone. Yet he still finds it necessary to tear me a new one when I'm trying to help him.
