If I don't use any thermal paste temporarily...

I need to run my computer out of case to test if it works...my normal CPU cooling is water and I don't want to set the whole thing up just to find out that it doesn't work...

I have a spare air heat sink lying around that I could use. Could I just place it on the CPU with a fan and without any thermal paste to see if it the CPU works?

yeh shouldnt be a problem, but dont torture test it or anything.. as long as its not running full load should be perfectly ok.

Contact between a heatsink and the surface of a CPU die is never perfect that's why we have thermal paste.
It might not work in your scenario but nevermind; most motherboard would shut down automatically if CPU gets too hot.

Yeah I do have thermal paste lying around but I hate having to keep cleaning it up...especially that vile Arctic Silver garbage that gets everywhere and fries everything if you don't do it right...

I just need to be able to press the power button and have the system beep and go into bios at least.

Takes all of 20secs to apply the stuff and less than 20secs to remove it with some isopropyl alcohol. You risk frying your cpu over what? Saving 40secs of your time?

I have ran a pc for about a month without any paste. It was a Palomino 2000+ as well. Ran about 60C idle with no thermal paste, but it ran.

Well I just didn't know how effective it would be. If it would just increase the CPU temp like 5 degrees of course I wouldn't use any, but if I risk frying it then I definately would use some.

again, there are a lot of things that "should" work...but it's a risk...if you dont care if you lose your CPU, then do it...but if you want to be sure, get a little thermal compund...if you think cleaning of compound is a pain, try replacing the CPU (and possibly the MOBO) cuz you didnt want to take that 2 min to do it right

Do you have some available to you? If you do, there should be no question of applying it! If you don't and you want to wing it, go for it.. But if you have, by all means APPLY IT!

i believe the OP uses TOO MUCH thermal compound.

Just a dab will do ya.

a TINY dab . . . just enough to fill the tiny holes

then it only takes a couple of seconds to wipe it off with alcohol
