Will soon be building system w/Intel DX38BT motherboard, and Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I am not planning to set up my disks in a RAID array (SATA II is plenty fast for me). I know this seems like a dumb question (and probably is) but I should not install any of the RAID drivers that come on the Intel installaion disk (either the "Marvell Driver" or the Intel Matrix Storage Manager"), correct?
 
The beauty of Windows updates is that even if you do install the drivers and they turn out to be outdated then Windows will replace them for your during a routine update.

Basically there is little harm in installing them. At worst they won't be used by the system, at best will be used.
 
You won't have to deal with using a floppy disk during the install of Vista to add the RAID controller drivers onto the system for Vista to immediately use so it can see the RAID disks to load the OS onto those disks.
 
Okay, I think you guys answered my question, but I want to make sure everyone's clear--I am not--repeat, NOT--going to set up a RAID array in my new build.

I recall in my last build--which admittedly has 3-year old Intel RAID software on it--that the Intel Matrix Storage Manager caused me all sorts of problems. I'm trying to start out w/as clean an install as I can, so if there's a problem, I stand a better chance of finding it quicker. So I don't want to install anything that I don't need right away.

This is not to say that I might not add RAID down the road--I might. But this is Vista 64-bit, and I want to get it completely stable (well, okay, as stable as Windows can get), before I make any changes or additions. I am starting out w/a pair of Seagate 7200.11 750GB hard drives, so storage space will hardly be an issue for awhile. Maybe I'll RAID them later, maybe not. But for now, no RAID.

And BTW, that "Marvell" driver I mentioned is listed on Intel's download page as "RAID: Marvell Driver". I know that Marvell usually is the maker of the LAN in Intel boards, but this download page is just for updated drivers, and apparently Marvell also makes the RAID controller.

So bottom line: if I am definitely not going to use RAID, there is no reason to install either of these drivers, correct?
 
You don't have to install either Intel Matrix Storage Manager or Marvell RAID driver.

Marvell driver is for the two eSATA ports in the back panel by a Marvell SATA controller. It should work normally in non-RAID without installing driver.

I think I understand what you are saying, but I want to be sure: I will be using those two eSATA ports in the back panel, but on individual, non-RAID external drives. You are saying those two eSATA ports do not need the Marvell driver to run individual external drives, correct?
 
All you will need is the INF for the board along with the lan and usb i think. Anything else wont be need it, and sound. The raid drivers you will have to actually do a process to install them, so don't worry about it.
