If I can only afford 1 lens after buying a body, what would it be?

lol, yeah. right around that time, the 5100 was announced so i waited for a good deal.

what about the 50mm f/1.8 AF-S?
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-1-8...7695962&sr=8-1

I knew that they were coming out w/ a new 50mm f/1.8 that had AF for bodies that don't have built-in focusing motors, I just didn't realize it was out already 😛

The 50mm f/1.8G AF-S (the D is the one that most people get, then realize that it doesn't AF) should be an excellent lens, for the price too. With that being equivalent to 80mm on a FF, should be great for portraits 🙂

lol it took 8 months to decide? 😀

check out the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S lens 🙂 (don't get the 50mm f/1.8, no AF on beginner bodies)

hey, doing lots of reading and youtube watching and someone said a "professional" said that a prime smaller than a 50mm will distort the face.

troof?

I find I only use my 35mm f2 on my Canon 60D. Yeah the 50mm f1.8 is faster and cheaper, but so is the build quality as the ring is already loose. The only time I put on a zoom (kit lens 18-135mm) was when I was filming some Tule Elk in Point Reyes and I didnt want to get too close. Otherwise, the 35mm works perfectly in every situation for me. In general, you should have at least one good fast prime lens, then work up from there if you need it.

found this blog for those interested in comparing (although it's the f/1.4 on the 50mm)

learned that 50mm is too long for a crop body. 35mm it is.

Honestly it depends what you like to take pictures of the most 😛 And you're absolutely right, you have to take into account the crop factor on DX bodies, meaning 35mm = 52.5mm on FF, and 50mm = 75mm on FF. 50mm on DX is tight, but you can take some FUN shots w/ it. 35mm is more "all purpose" and in order to get a little closer to the subject, you'll just have to step forward 😛 either way, have fun! 😀
